Scotland driving distance Edinburgh Crieff/Peebles Hydro

Hi I’ve got to be in Edinburgh over the last weekend in May - when this was agreed I didn’t realise it was a bank holiday. My mistake, just never thought!
Its Saturday 27th to Wednesday 31st.
I’ve never really spent any time in Scotland, will be bringing the kids.
I am really struggling to find accommodation that is reasonable in price, would consider anything but as we live very rurally it would be nice to be in a city/busy town where we could walk to cafes/things even if we had to drive to get to Edinburgh. Think we are priced out of Edinburgh that weekend!
I’ve seen Crieff Hydro snd Peebles Hydro hotels.
They are expensive but if they were worth it I’d consider it - anyone got an opinion?
Any ideas at all welcome.

Yes it's bad to drive in but so are other cities so probably not hugely different so imagine a lot of the fibre works going on here are happening in other cities too so are having similar problems. On the upside the public transport network is fantastic so if you find somewhere to park your car where you stay you need never use it. Sounds like you want something more upmarket but the premier Inn in Newhaven is a fantastic location for exploring the city and has free parking

Everyone who’s suggesting hotels in Edinburgh……they’re all full due to the other events that are on that weekend and the handful that aren’t are £300+ a night! The nearest available premier inn is Dunfermline.

Dunfermline wouldn't be a bad shout. Very easy for the city and a decent sized town. Lovely park for the kids with roaming peacocks to see. Is it marathon weekend or something?

Crieff is really great for kids.

Have a look at doubletree Hilton queensferry crossing

It’s marathon weekend and Harry styles is playing at Murrayfield on Friday and Saturday!
dunfermline premier inn is a bit out of the city centre on a retail park. The one in Stirling might be better as it’s close to the station and cheaper.

Crieff Hydro is great but it could be anywhere. Edinburgh is (imo) one of the greatest cities in the world. Glasgow isn’t too shabby either.

You could spend Saturday in Glasgow see the sights Sat/Sun morning then drive to Falkirk (Premier Inn). Kelpies and Falkirk Wheel are worth a visit. Get the train to and from Edinburgh Mon and Tue.

Depending on your ferry time, your interest, the weather, you could stop in Alloway (Robert Burns) or Troon (beach) on the way back to Cairnryan on Wednesday.

Don’t go to Dunfermline you will spend ages in traffic. Stirling is lovely, Falkirk is less lovely but is a great base for getting to and from Edinburgh. There is a choice of two train stations and it takes around 30 mins with trains every 15 mins or so. Stirling trains go via Falkirk take 45 mins and are less frequent.

All Falkirk Premier Inns have availability. Central is near to both train stations and is right on the canal that takes you to the Wheel and the Kelpies.

This is a good point - Dunfermline or anywhere that involves going over the bridge from Edinburgh can take ages either way at the weekend, the Edinburgh-bound traffic can tail back to J3 at Dunfermline for no apparent reason. It’s very annoying!
