Why are car colours so dull these days? All those greys, blacks and silvers...

We are beginning to think about buying a new (to us) car and looking around at autotrader etc I am struck about how dull all the car colours are. So many greays, blacks, silvers; most exciting seems to be navy blue. What has happened to the reds, maroons, yellows I remember from my youth?

We are looking at 5ish year old cars - mostly 'sensible' estates - anyone have any preference for Skoda Octavia/ Peugeot 308/ VW Golf estate/ an other in the 'small' estate category ?

I've had 3 cars in 20 years, all the same shade of metalic monochrome. I long for colour! Buying second hand, you just tend to get what the mass market chose a few years earlier. Yawn.

People seem to regularly fail to see it despite the fact that I always have side/ headlights on, and it not being small.

I hate it when dark, dull colour cars don't use lights when driving in high contrast light conditions or very dull light- which covers most of the winter. They can be a PITA to see emerging from the shadows.

It seems madness to me, to have road coloured cars. Surely it's a lot safer to have cars in colours that contrast with the road? Yet everything seems to be silver or grey.

Agree! My company car is charcoal grey- we weren't allowed to order a different colour even at our own expense. I call it "dawn and dusk" coloured. At this time of year, I swear people don't see me even with lights on.

Once upon a time I had a yellow car. Then I didn't.

Apparently the other driver didn't see me as she pulled out the junction into the side of my car...

One day I arrived home and every single car parked on the street was grey. All of them! It may have been a fail of the matrix!

I like black cars. I seem to have a thing with sky blue cars. I have never touchwood actually crashed into one but the only time I have had oh shit brake that’s a car in front is when I have to stop behind a sky blue car. I don’t know why but it’s a thing for me. Has happened twice!

My car is burnt orange. A Peugeot. It was the default colour - or pay £795 for another colour. Stands out for sure.

I do agree. Last time I bought a car I specified that I would not have black, white, silver or grey, which left as my one choice a metallic blue or red. I went with red, but I would have liked more choice.

My very first car, fondly remembered, was a lovely pale yellow which I don't think is available these days, and I really can't understand why.

I love my yellow car, so easy to find & its brightness reminds me of so many things I love, daffodils, sunshine, sandy beaches, sunflowers. It can be quite amusing in a school car park too!
