So I was driving to the shops from work to get some lunch. I was on the road going straight and a car came out of a side road straight into my drivers rear side. Insurance have been told and we exchanged details. Insurance agreed not at fault and have organsised a courtesy car and for my car to be sent to the repair shop which has all happened very quickly to be fair.
There's fairly extensive damage to the rear door and red paint and scartches to alloys as well. I can't work out of there's also red paint inside the wheel as well as on the tyres as it was getting late once I got home from work (pics) and wondered if there was could the wheel be compromised?
It's a BMW X1 77K 2015 and I'm wondering if it could possibly be a write off or if this is easily repairable.
I don't want to open the door as I'm not sure if it'll close again. Insurance weren't sure if it's safe to drive or not without someone seeing it.

If it's repaired, does that mean it's value will be diminished as well as it will have an accident recorded against it?

I had much less damage then this on my car and it was an 8k bill for an Audi A6 and the courtesy car which was a bmw 335, which was the same class as my car. I didn't watch a VW up because some Wally crashed into me

It went to court because the kid denied it but he lost obviously

Our car was 6 weeks old and not a write off

I wouldn't be ok to drive this car seeing the second lot of pics it looks like the whole car has changed shape

I would ask them to put it in writing to you that they are happy for you to drive this car with no increased risk of harm or injury if you had another car accident

X

Yes, stuckonpills. I was thinking what if I had another bump to that door? It's already creased in so what would happen next?
Also, there's often damage we can't see.
Why should I put my kids in danger potentially because of someone else?

I sent the close up photos and they're still insisting it's fine to drive at the repair centre. 🙄

It looks fine to drive. As long as the wheel isn't damaged you're good to go.
Be prepared for a long repair though parts are very difficult to get right now and insurance companies are struggling.
That's why more cars are getting written off

That car is absolutely fine to drive.

It is minor cosmetic damage to the outer panels, none of the actual structure of the car has been compromised.

The outer panels offer no structural rigidity or form any part of the safety cell. You have already said none of the airbags went off so it is a very minor collision and there is absolutely no reason not to drive the car.

You could drive it like that for another 100 thousand miles with no issue at all.

seeing the second lot of pics it looks like the whole car has changed shape

how has it changed shape?

Margarita45 · 08/02/2023 19:47

I’d drive that. The door doesn’t hold any structural integrity behind it. The lower mouldings are fine as are the wheels and wheel arch.
