Argh! I just want a sensible set of kitchen scales!

I'm looking for a kitchen scales. About the size of an A5 sheet of paper and skin so that I can store it on its side with the cookbooks. Smooth surface, no dirt-traps, so it is easy to wipe clean. Rechargeable. Able to accurately weigh up to 5-10kg in 1g increments.

So far so good. Plenty of scales fit this list.

But.

Units. Argh!

They all offer a zillion units to scroll through! All you need is g and lb&oz. Please don't give me oz and kg to scroll through as well. Or just give me those. And why on earth do I need ml and fl oz? 1ml of water weighs 1g. 1fl oz of water weighs 1oz. I am not doing sciency things in a lab. I don't need fractions of a g precision. Irritates me even more when they have a milk setting as well. Argh! I don't want to have to scroll through all the options - just to switch between metric and imperial.

The scale I'm replacing has that 5 or 6 settings to scroll through, just to switch between metric and imperial. It is sooooo irritating.

And breathe. And continue Googling.

I've got one from pro cook that doesn't have that many weight settings. Maybe have a look there.

ProCooks tick every box except rechargeable.

I have scales which just do g and oz, are flat on top, wipe clean etc. BUT have a little round battery in there somewhere so not rechargeable. Battery lasts ages though, months +

I'm stuck in bed today, but expect to be up tomorrow so will see whose they are when I get down if you want to know. Cd also take a pic. Got them years ago...

We have a Salter 1066 BKDR15 which is a flat kitchen scale. You can put your bowl (or whatever) onto it and tare it off. As you add ingredients, tare off again. Simple gms or oz. Button battery lasts about two years for us. Easy clean too. Range 3Kg (7lb).

B00140VYEG is the ASIN on Amazon. £7.50 at the moment.

Good Salter one here too

I have these

They are not rechargeable but the batter lasts years - well it does for me if you are a heavy user it may not.

You don't need to use any of the 'nuti' options, although it can be useful at times.

Sorry I don't know what the max amount to weigh they is.

According to this, Fluid Ounces are NOT the same as ounces.

Are Fluid Ounces the Same as Ounces?
To put it simply: No, fluid ounces are not the name same as ounces. Both fluid ounces and ounces represent a unit of measurement, but they are quite different. Fluid ounces, as the name might imply, are specifically meant to measure volume (often of liquid ingredients like water), while ounces measure weight, usually of solid ingredients like all-purpose flour.

No, they are not the same. One is a measure of volume, the other of weight. 1 fl oz of water weighs 1 oz. 1 fl oz of milk weighs very slightly more than 1fl oz of water, because milk has slightly more mass (stuff in it) than water. The difference is trivial when it comes to domestic cooking.

Besides, you can only measure volumes by weight if you know how much each one weighs, so what's the point?

Just reminded me I need new scales. Have ordered the salter ones

sleekitbeastie · 08/02/2023 08:17

These for £10. May just be grams (that's all I use)

BarbaraofSeville · 08/02/2023 08:30

We have the Ikea ones linked above. They come on in grammes every time but they only go up to 3 kilos according to the link, which I would have though was enough for most household baking/cooking. The battery lasts forever, so I'd say being nonrechargeable probably shouldn't be a dealbreaker.

If you want higher capacity than that, you probably want commercial scales, but then might not meet your other requirements as people in these environments might be the ones wanting the features you're trying to avoid.

However, I wouldn't buy the Ikea ones again as they turn off very quickly so you have to be on the ball when weighing things out, otherwise you've put half of something in and don't know how much. I find them hard to turn on too - the sensor doesn't seem to respond to any kind of finger touch - I've tried gentle and firm presses, both long and short and nothing works. The only way to turn them on seems to be to put a heavy item like a tin can on them.

When they break or if I get fed up with them, I'll probably replace them with the Salter ones.

emmathedilemma · 08/02/2023 09:11

Is rechargeable really a deal breaker? I use my kitchen scales daily, have had them for years and don't think i've ever changed the battery.
