Dog owners not picking up after their dogs

Such a first world problem but I seem to get disproportionately angry about this.

We live in a lovely small town with a village feel. Most people have dogs and there have never been any issues (been here 5 years).

Over the last couple of weeks however the few roads around us are increasingly getting covered in dog poo. I guess it just takes one owner to not do the right thing for it to get like this. We live right by the school and dozens of kids walk on these pavements every morning and poo is getting trod on and smeared around. Honestly it's disgusting and I'm getting fed up of having to be super careful wherever I go.

We had this where we lived before and it was making me equally angry. I was so glad when we moved and there was no problem here.

What can I do? I'm so up in arms about this right now, thinking I'll put signs up and message the local FB page etc (ridiculous I know) but honestly what can I do?

This makes me rage, too. It's dirty and disrespectful, not to mention incredibly hazardous for children. We have had more instances since a housing estate has gone up nearby, complete with clueless dog owners letting their animals shit everywhere. I have complained to the council and the dog warden but not a lot has been done. I saw our neighbours' little shit machines do it outside our gate one night on our CCTV, so I picked it up in a tissue and stuck in in the back of their flatbed truck, dirty fuckers.

Rockbird · 07/02/2023 12:06

Also have a dog and think it's gross. Why do people think it's ok to just waltz off and leave it? My dog has done some disgusting specimens but I steel myself and clean it up, it's part of responsible dog ownership.

I actually emailed my councillor about this yesterday. I’m sick of dodging it on the school run. She replied and basically said there was nothing she could do

When I used to walk my children to school I felt the whole walk was a game of don't step on the dog poo. I think they only stepped in it about four times in all but only because I was like a demented woman shouting "oh no, it's there, quick, avoid, avoid". It makes me so very angry. When I see an owner pick up their dog's poo I feel like clapping them. It's ridiculous. We also had a phantom shitter in our front garden it stopped when the person I guessed it might be moved house. Not 100% sure but I think it was a dog and not the owner!

Loads of people round here do it. They’re all in mobility scooters so will claim they can’t bend down. Not an excuse, if you can’t pick up after a dog, then you shouldn’t have one.

Blossomtoes · 07/02/2023 12:12

It’s strange that it’s such a problem in some places and not others. Every other person has a dog here but you never see any dog shit. We’re all clearly very law abiding.

My 88 year old, seriously disabled, neighbour would laugh at their pitiful excuses. She brandishes a long-handled scooping device from her scooter, like a jousting Knight charging into battle...

Yes I hate this too. I saw 3 this morning taking my faughter to school, all trudden in and up the path. My daughter has trud in dog mess 3 times on her way to and from school when we had all the snow and couldn't see it. I've trud in it when out in the fields taking my dogs for a walk. The pavements by my daughters school is disgusting. I used to have a note in my window asking people to pick up dog mess. It's disgusting. I have 2 dogs and always clean up after them, it's part of being a dog owner! If they leave the streets like that, imagine their yards!

Isleoftights · 07/02/2023 12:59

Live opposite a beach popular with dog walkers; and in summer, children, etc.. Many do pick up, but others, first thing they do, is let the dog off the lead and walk briskly on, dog immediately does a number two behind them, which they don't see (I suspect deliberately).

I agree that the only way to sort this out is dog licences linked to microchips and dna, massive fines for offending and lots of dog wardens.

A great idea, why is this not a thing? How do we campaign for this to be a thing? The cost of the licences could cover the wardens and testing.

This thread has just reminded me of how I hated taking DC out in the buggy when she was a baby because I'd be always end up with it in the wheels, so gross and really hazardous for a baby.

SquashPenguin · 07/02/2023 14:14

We caught a bloke on the cctv outside our office letting his dog shit all over the pavement in broad daylight before walking off. We printed off lots of pictures of him, along with a rather patronising message about knocking on the door and asking for a poo bag if you’re caught short again- and put it in all our windows along the street. Loads of people were reading it, and it never happened again! It was pretty funny 😄

AutumnDaysConkers · 07/02/2023 14:33

I hate it. I love the DNA dog poop idea where there would be a register with every dogs DNA on. Then when there is dog poop the owner gets fined. I really think this is the only way forward.

Have you any idea what it would cost?

AutumnDaysConkers · 07/02/2023 14:36

@Blossomtoes no I don't. But I think the amount that people would pay in fines would pay for it.

nxa · 07/02/2023 14:37

I have a holly tree in my front garden that some local scrote has decided needs to be decorated with filled poo bags. I can't work out if this is worse than them not picking it up at all.

Having the tree removed soon because I hate holly (it was here when I moved in) so I wonder what they'll do then.

AutumnDaysConkers · 07/02/2023 14:39

I've look on the petitions uk website and someone has already started a petition for a central DNA dog database.
Maybe we should all sign this and get it happening.

That’s disgusting. It’s a nasty habit where I walk my dog, I sometimes collect three or four bags to put in the bin. It’s almost worse than not picking it up at all.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 07/02/2023 14:57

There is an old man and woman who live in a bungalow across the road who have no garden of their own, with 4 dogs. They walk them all separately to the green by my house and let them shit all over it. Caught them numerous times. They don't give a shit. I've reported them too but nothing was done. Council say there are enough signs and bins in my area so that's that.

They're purely scum.

Blossomtoes · 07/02/2023 14:34

It wouldn't, once set up, be as costly as you fear, and would be partially funded by whacking great fines for those caught bang to rights. I'm willing to bet there would be plenty of eager volunteers to help get it up and running, as well; I know many many people who are sick to fucking death with local public areas and beauty spots being ruined by antisocial, selfish bastards and their shitting mutts.

IHeartGeneHunt · 07/02/2023 15:02

I have a dog and I hate it! My dog trod in poo a while ago- had to carry her up to my flat to wash her feet in the bath. Vile.
It's two particular owners near me and right in the middle of the path on our estate every time. It got worse in the park during lockdown.

That is actually worse, utter stupidity and disrespect.

It wouldn't surprise me if their yard was pristine actually, just selfish people who only care about themselves

If someone could post the link I would love to sign

AutumnDaysConkers · 07/02/2023 20:06

It was there earlier but for some reason has been taken down....

AutumnDaysConkers · 07/02/2023 20:21

So apparently the government can't implement it. The local council has to. So you have to contact your local councillor who has to put pressure on the local council.
