Non resident temporary car insurance in the UK

Help me!

We are coming back to visit family in the UK in a few months. I have a full UK driving licence but am a non resident as live overseas (although I am a British citizen). I want to borrow my mum's car whilst I am over.

Where the hell do I get car insurance from? Every time I google it it asks me to put in my address but I won't be living there?! Please help!

Where will you be staying? With your mother?

Vinniepolis · 06/02/2023 22:00

Can your mum not put you
on her insurance? We had an Australian housesitter once and put her on our insurance so she could do some siteseeing in the area.

Can she put you on her policy as a named driver?

Defiantlynot41 · 06/02/2023 22:02

PP are correct. The best and easiest way is for your Mum to add you as a temporary additional driver to her policy. She needs to use that phrase!

SuitsYouSirS · 06/02/2023 22:20

They said no last time - no idea why. Could be because I am a non-resident?

Shouldn't be. Did you pass your test in the UK?

Defiantlynot41 · 06/02/2023 23:39

Apologies, just re-read your OP.

Maybe a case of giving too much info? If she simply asks to add you as a temporary additional driver and gives her address as yours assuming you are staying with her. Or even just add you to her policy for the res of the policy term, may not cost any more.

This is exactly what I was going to say. It's the easiest and simplest solution.

I just did this for my dB who is visiting. Non uk resident and non uk (eu) licence. I just called my insurance provider and added him for about £15 for 2 weeks.

I added my daughter who lives in Argentina and has a Argentine driving licence, because her UK one had expired, to my Admiral policy.

Isn’t this technically incorrect, as i will be non resident, if they found out wouldn’t insurance be invalid?

You are using the word resident in the tax sense. All the insurance company needs to know is where you are living, as a British passport holder you have every right to live at your mums. As long as you are driving in the U.K. there's no issue.

StillMedusa · 07/02/2023 20:53

Yes, just get your Mum to add you as a temporary driver.
My son came over from Oz last summer where he is a permanent resident and it only cost me £20 for the month. You just use your Mum's address as it's temporary!

SuitsYouSirS · 07/02/2023 20:56

Ok so we are sure that won't affect the insurance, I feel like I am not being truthful....
