Amazon return...I'm confused!

So I've got to return two books to Amazon. I selected return via post office. I've been emailed a QR code. It states that the post office will "pack, label and return" the items.

So do I literally just hand over the two books, unwrapped?? Or do I wrap them in brown paper first? I haven't got the original Amazon packaging as it was a brown bag which I ripped open.

If I wrap them, will they need to open it anyway to check that I'm returning the correct things? Seems odd to just hand the books straight over.....

Anyone done a recent return via the Post Office?

Package them up and the Post Office will scan the QR code and print a label to stick on your package.

Yes they wrap them now.

I took my item in a box and they took it out of the box to put it in an amazon bag.

They were baffled too but its what they have to do now

I did a return like this at the weekend and I thought the same. But yes, you literally just hand them the items unwrapped so they can see them and show them the QR code. They then bag them up and label them. The refund was in my account the next day!

Wow! Thank you! I was worried I'd look an idiot at the post office so thank you for confirming I don't have to wrap them.

Well, I took them in, they scanned the qr code and then she got an Amazon bag and printed something off. She then said thank you and goodbye! I asked about a receipt and she just said I'd get an email. That was two hours ago, I have no email and I'm now panicking!! I have no proof I took them in and I left before she had even put them in the bag as there was a big queue. She seemed experienced so I'm hoping that the email comes soon..... Any advice if it doesn't??

Have you checked the status of the return in your Amazon account?

Whyisitdarkalready · 07/02/2023 11:03

Yes, it still says what it did yesterday.

@VioletCharlotte How soon did you get an email to say they'd received the return?? I'm starting to think somethings gone wrong as I've not had anything, no acknowledgement from Amazon at all and it's been about 36 hours....

Don't want to worry you OP, but on one of the few times I returned something to Amazon, I got the return acceptance email before I'd even left the shop I used to return the thing.

The refund was processed straight away too. I assume that they trusted me to actually send back the £200 coffee machine I had decided was too big, too noisy and too complicated for me and not a box of bricks instead.

Whyisitdarkalready · 08/02/2023 17:00

@BarbaraofSeville That's what I'm worried about! They scanned my QR code and she said it had gone through then it looked like she went to collect something that had printed. Was yours a QR code?

I've just tried speaking to customer services, and they won't consider looking into it until 2 weeks have passed. So annoyed!!

Still nothing!

Well, 2 weeks have passed and no refund or acknowledgment that it even left the post office counter!

Thankfully, via the chat function, Amazon have not even questioned my version of events and have given me a refund!!! I'm guessing the fact that it was only about £15 and I rarely return items went in my favour.

In future, if the post office don't give a receipt, I'm gonna take a photo of the items on the counter as proof. This has been needlessly stressful. Hope I can draw a line under it now.

I use a local shop to return Amazon items. I take it in out of the packaging, scan the QR code, the guy gives me a huge envelope and a sticker and a receipt-always ask for one. I was refunded on the same day.

Whyisitdarkalready · 21/02/2023 16:23

I did ask for a receipt but the post office person wouldn't give me one!! Just said to wait for an email.

Hi I've just done one today they put the books in an amazon bag for you and scan your qr code

ruralwanderer · 07/02/2024 15:38

I got caught out with that too and like you, the chatbot sorted the refund for me even though they had no record of the item being returned. I always return via Evri now as Royal Mail are entirely hopeless.

Tried this with my Amazon return this morning at my local post office/newsagent.

And he said it has to be boxed even though I told him its an amazon return with the QR code! luckily I had a bag so just wrapped it properly as best as I could otherwise he wanted me to buy a box and tape at overpriced prices.

I would recommend you just box it lightly or bring a box and tape and scissors while you go down there otherwise you can waste time and money.

At least if its boxed lightly up, and they say no box you can just open it up and hand them the package separately.
