Good series to watch over a weekend

DH is taking the kids to his parents this weekend, leaving Friday after school getting back tea time Sunday. I am beyond excited. I'm planning on parking my arse on the sofa and doing very little other than watching TV, reading and eating anything I want. I need recommendations for a decent series I can do over the two days. Think Happy Valley, Love Life or Fleabag, easily digestible, holds attention but done and dusted in 6-8 episodes. I like crime, murder, romance (but funny). Nothing too heavy. Thank you!!!

SAS Rogue Heroes (WWII)
The Serpent Queen (Renaissance France)
Interview with the Vampire (2022 series)

@Onnabugeisha Where are you watching Interview with the Vampire? I loved those books when I was younger.

The White Lotus. (The name of a hotel chain).

Series 1 set in an hotel in Maui, Hawaii and Series 2 in Sicily, Italy…. just gorgeous locations (and in reality are actually both Four Seasons luxury 5* hotels).

The fab actress Jennifer Coolidge is in both series (just won a Golden Globe for it) and Tom Hollander is in the second series.

Don’t miss it!

I loved Blackbird on Apple TV.

tinytemper66 · 07/02/2023 06:17

Three Pines on Amazon prime (if you have it)

MrsMikeHeck · 07/02/2023 06:27

Mare of Easttown (Now) HBO crime drama with Kate Winslet. Really, really good. Proper whodunnit that keeps you guessing til the end. If you like crime and strong female leads, this is a great bet.

Agree with PPs about White Lotus (Now). It could have been written as the perfect watch-when-your-family-are-away. Tis a bit junky, but really really well made junky, and again keeps you guessing til last episode.

The Royals on Netflix is great!!! About a fictitious British royal family (with reference to our actually one!). Glam and extravagant. Made for American TV so there's lots of references to "cell phones" etc which I found a bit irritating. And it finishes with a cliff hanger at the end of series 4 with no plans to make series 5!!!! Well worth a binge watch though.

IWonderWhyIBother · 07/02/2023 06:34

Tulsa King on Paramount +

Pinotpleasure · 07/02/2023 08:23

Not sure if you think that Jeremy Clarkson should be cancelled or not, but the new series of “Clarkson’s Farm” begins this Friday 10th February on Amazon Prime.

Don’t know if every episode drops at once though or if it’s going to be every Friday.

However I did previously suggest further up this thread to watch “The White Lotus” and I’m sure you’ll love it! Remember to get some chocolate/wine/cake in too to imbibe whatever you’re going to watch! Enjoy!

White Lotus - there's two seasons but the seasons themselves are standalone so perfect for one weekend viewing
Bad sisters is a stand alone season too and is darkly funny
Ted Lasso is two seasons but so easy to watch and such gorgeous funny feel good viewing (don't worry if you don't like football as it doesn't matter)
The English - stunning cinematography, Emily Blunt is fabulous - loved it.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 07/02/2023 08:29

How do you feel about subtitles?

If you don't mind them, then The Empress on Netflix is a bit of Marie Antoinette levels pretty with some vaguely historical drama.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 07/02/2023 08:37

On BBC iPlayer you can download the whole series of North Sea Connection, an Irish thriller, its good.

On Sky there are 2 series of Upright, Australian comedy with half hour episodes.

I second You on Netflix

White Lotus on Sky

Mustn't be on any longer - shame.

Catastrophe - on all four.
Very good.

This. It's fabulous. Also Him n Her.

MrsMariaReynolds · 07/02/2023 09:08

I really liked The Patient on Disney+

Yellowjackets is decent too

QuizteamAguillera · 07/02/2023 09:09

The White Lotus (2 seasons) is absolutely brilliant.

MrsMariaReynolds · 07/02/2023 09:11

And YY(!) to My Brilliant Friend. That's probably my most favourite TV series ever (besides the original The Killing).

It's not a breezy watch though. The storyline are intense and some people find subtitles hard work.

SolitudeNotLoneliness · 07/02/2023 09:12

I'd warm up with Jam and Jerusalem that used to be on bbc, very warm and lovely, then knock back some drink at a child care unfriendly hour just because you can haha and do in the full series of fleabag as it is amazing and first time I watched it I bawled at the very end.

Hongkongsuey · 07/02/2023 09:13

Unforgotten-several series but complete story in each.
Queen's Gambit
Godless-violent but a great series with Lady Mary from Downton!
Any of the Harlan Coben limited series.
Jack Reacher on Prime-great fun.
Call My Agent-French but funny and one of the best things I’ve ever seen.

AnotherSpare · 07/02/2023 09:22

On BBCiPlayer - Five Bedroom. One of the best series I've seen for a long time, brilliant drama/comedy, perfect binge watching.

On Netflix - Wanted. Crime/drama/comedy, it's brilliant, cleverly made but not too serious. I binged watched it twice!
