NHS emergency leave

A very close relative has been taken to hospital as an emergency. 3 hours away. Does anyone know what the rules are about emergency leave or compassionate leave or does it vary from trust to trust? Any help appreciated, very scared right now. Reluctant to take sick leave as close to my trigger point for a verbal warning due to a personal chronic condition. Thank you

It completely varies depending on your manager I'd say, and the scenario.
Hope your relative is OK.

Is everyone who works for the NHS entitled a certain amount of days?

Yes you are however it very much depends on your managers discretion how many days you are given.

I'm in the same predicament except I work for local government. To be honest the rules are crap.

Usually, a manager can agree up to 5 days compassionate leave. However, this is usually for immediate family issues. You also can request emergency unpaid leave, or they may agree to annual leave. It very much depends on the manager and is down to their discretion. If they are a relative you are very close to, they may agree compassionate leave

I personally would not agree to sick leave as you are not ill

Its not set nationally so it varies by trust but its usually 5 days pro rata per annual leave year. It depends on the relationship with the relative as to whether the leave is granted, spouse, child or anyone you have caring responsibilities for would be approved... anyone else i think it would be managers discretion.

Ask your manager!

Up to your manager as the family member isn't immediate.

Do you have any AL leave if your manager doesn't agree?

It is an immediate family member.

In my trust, special leave is for an unforeseen emergency and you can have 7 days pro rata per annum. Usually 1 day special leave per emergency episode as special leave should be used for you to put measures in place to enable you to be in work, eg organising someone else to be with your relative the next day. Family related emergencies are for immediate family. It's all on managers discretion though but I've not refused special leave personally.
If it's refused, take emergency annual leave?

Have you got access to your trust's intranet? There should be a policy on there for special leave for this kind of situation.

At my trust we allow 5 days special leave which can be used in this kind of situation. Have you asked your manager?
