Cost to build new office above garage?

My DP and I both work from home and it's become a bit 'tight.' We have a double garage and were thinking that it'd make sense to build it up to turn it into a large office we can share, so that the house remains our home, and we don't blur the work/life boundaries as much as we currently do working from a small office room together. This would also give us a much needed ground floor spare room as the current office would be reverted back to its original use.

My DP does technical drawings for a living so often has rolls of paper, maps, etc. splayed out. So he does need quite a bit of space. I work with two large screens but really only need a large desk and some storage.

If anyone has built above their double garage, how much did it cost? We are keen to retain the garage so converting the existing building wouldn't work. We really want to build on top of it if cost is not silly. Thank you.

Garages attached to houses don’t necessarily have the same foundations and you might have to strengthen them. You could consult a structural engineer or surveyor initially, as it would affect the overall cost.

You would have to get your garage checked by a structural engineer. Then if they given the go ahead contact some builders for quotes.
We were going to do the same but our garage is single skin brick and wouldn't be suitable. We would have to knock it down and start again.

We didn't use the garage as a garage so converted that instead.
The insulation ,new window, new roof & floor, plasterboard, plaster and electrics came to around 30k. Its warm enough in there without having to have any heating on but when it gets really cold I just put a fan heater on for half an hour

@Sugarplumfairy65 £30 without any construction. Is that cheap? I hear of people having extension built for way over £100K so I really don't know what to guess. My OH just said that the foundations are OK so we wouldn't need to start from scratch.

Is your oh a structural engineer? If not, how does he know that the foundations are suitable.
Yes, it was 30k without any construction. The price of materials has risen rapidly since 2020.
