Heavy period natural remedy

Sorry if this has been covered before but I just wanted to share something that those suffering from heavy periods might find useful.

I’ve always had heavy periods since my first ever period. While inconvenient and sometimes v painful they’ve never caused additional problems until I had kids. My periods now cause my ferritin to drop to the floor and I’ve had to have several iron infusions.

don’t have an issue with pcos/ cysts : weight or any other contributing factors.

my options for testing were to go back on pill, take ibuprofen back to back every period or some kind of acid or to have surgery. None of these were nice options as I feel like the ibuprofen/ other acid were pounding my kidneys, the pill DOES NOT agree with me and surgery seems so extreme and have heard horror stories but knew I had to do something.

I’m open to natural remedies but didn’t hold out much hope however, I came across a study about using ginger to treat heavy periods and it bloody works! Excuse pun.

I just take ginger three or four times a day the day before my period and for the first 3-4 days and it has really reduced the blood loss. I can now just use tampons whereas before I wouldn’t dare and always doubled up with a pad.

I have powdered ginger mixed into ginger tea as quite like the taste but I think you can get capsules.

just putting it out there as there is no harm in trying and it’s really working for me. Google the experiment. There is science behind it but can’t remember what.

Wow thanks for that I will try it.
The only thing that works at all
for me is transamic acid.

That was the acid that was recommended to me to try but I didn’t like the thought of having to take it for days every month until I hit menopause. I feel like I’ve put my organs through enough with my binge drinking youth 🙃

dam wish i had known that back in my 20's ended up with a microwave ablation, which worked, never had a period again, but i was done having kids. i was about 40

tootiredtobother, can I ask if you would recommend the ablation? Were there any side affects or pros/cons that only became evident afterwards?
I'm considering it but as I've just been through a year of fairly horrendous hospital treatment, the thought of going through yet another procedure (that could potentially cause complications) is putting me off. But of course being anemic isn't good for me either so it's a tough call!

Have you had a scan to see if you have fibroids?

Thank you, that's interesting. I'm looking at tablets- is that the same as ginger root extract?

I have a huge fibroid for years so I loose a huge amount of blood every month (I empty 10 mooncups). Every culture deals with menstruation pains in different ways. I spend some time in the Caribbean and the women there drink natural lime juice to deal with this issue, which makes sense it has lots of because vitamin c, antioxidants and anti inflammatory properties. Lime juice has been a god send. I squeeze one in water every day and two in period days.

For anyone interested, there's a great book called The Period Repair Manual that has lots of natural support for all kinds of period issues.

For me though, the only thing that sorted out my periods was an ablation. I had it almost a year ago and Oh.My.God it's changed my life. I'd recommend it to anyone who has done having children. I still have periods but they are just so light and I don't get any of the associated issues I used to have due to the heaviness of the bleeding.

I have also been taking magnesium which is supposed to help periods. It has helped with my pre menstrual spotting a bit.

Just to add to this I recently got told to stop taking my fish oil supplement to try to help with heavy periods. Saw doctors in three different countries and this is the only one that has mentioned it. I've done this but am also taking transxemic acid two days a month and that has helped a lot

OMG. I was taking cod liver oil for months and my periods will last for ages and the bleeding was terrible so I stopped taking them.

Not sure but dry is better than fresh so I just use the spice rack powder 😊

Back in those days, I read somewhere that cutting out red meat lessens the pain - takes a few months to work, if it's going to - but it worked for me when I had horribly painful periods (nb not a complete cure, but I definitely had less pain, so didn't need such strong meds).

@tootiredtobother can I ask, have you had a c section? I know they used to say you weren't eligible if you had. Hoping that's not the case! Also, did you have a GA?

That’s interesting because I was a vegetarian for years and they weren’t as bad. However, I was getting a bit deficient in some minerals etc so thought the meat would help with that but maybe it’s too much.

Pycnogenol - pine bark extract has been a game changer for me.

Does that decrease blood loss? Can only find info on its anti inflammatory properties
