Did we ever have Junior Mints in the UK?

I was watching the very wonderful Never Have I Ever the other day, and Junior mints were mentioned. I suddenly had this flashback to eating them as a child. I know there was a precursor to Poppets, but where they called Junior mints or something else?

And then as an addition, I was eating Liquorish Allsorts earlier and had a flashback to black and white mints! The one that looked similar to liquorish allsorts but we're minty flavoured. I cannot remember the last time I had some, but I googled them and you can still get them Grin

I've never seen them in the UK. We have a packet of these in my cupboard because my husband brought them back from Canada recently!

Never seen them in NW England in the last 50 years. And I'm a huge fan of mint and chocolate together.

I don't think I've ever seen these here. In the us of course but not in the U.K. I don't think

What was our equivalent called in the 1980s? Now we have Poppets, but there definitely used to be another chocolate ball filled with minty fondant in a little box before Poppets came along!

Are you thinking of mintola? They changed name to munchies, I think, but they were bitesize chocs with mint fondant centre. Came in a bar shaped packet stacked like rolls. Sort of like lego block sized after eights. They were lush - and weren't the same when they got rebranded.

*stacked like rolos

My memory goes back to 1970 and I can't remember anything similar.

Mintolas, Mint Cracknell and Ice Breaker I remember well. I can't think of anything else like Poppets though

No, I always liked them too!

I've just checked Wikipedia and it looks like they were always called Poppets in the UK. It's so weird as I had a real nostalgia moment when I saw the Junior mints on screen, but I have never been to the states and no American connections so I don't know why that happened!

I used to love Quirks. They were like pastel coloured smarties, with minty shells.
They came in a box.

Ketchupwee · 05/02/2023 22:49

You can buy these in my local petrol station. I remember them from being very young, and bought some a few weeks ago. They are a bit more gooey than poppets (almost like a round after eight)

Junior mints? So I could be remembering correctly then? Ooo I wonder if I can get hold of any. I'm curious now!

Poppets have been around for a long time. They were definitely around in the '80s. I don't think Junior Mints were ever sold here though they might be sold in some places now as we see more and more American candy in shops.
