could anyone advise please?
does a company secretary have to actually do work for the company, or can they just be given this title and that of company director without technically being involved with the company?
Private company, ran by married couple, the wife is a secretary and director but doesn’t do any work. Is this usual?

She is the one responsible for filing the necessary forms and returns with Companies House. She may not work in the day to day running of the company and she may or may not get a salary.

Not unusual for small family firms / incorporated sole traders.

There are legal responsibilities that go with being a director or company secretary, but no requirement to be actively involved in the day to day activities of the business.

Director would be expected to attend board meetings (but frequency is at the company's discretion). Company secretary responsible for Companies House filings, board meeting agendas and minutes, but much of this can be outsourced.

It's a pointless role, that's why they did away with the requirement to have one. But yes, it's perfectly normal for it to be the partner of the owner and perfectly normal they would have little to no involvement in the company.

Thank you for the replies. That’s answered my question
