Vinted or eBay - as a seller?

TokyoBouncyBall · 05/02/2023 12:46

So I've always sold things on eBay but have gone off it for the hassle and the scammers.

And I have a couple of bits of almost unworn designer clothing that I want to sell, but am wondering if Vinted is now better or whether this is just because I have seen so many ads? What's other people's experience been? Do I swap or stick with eBay, where DH and I have at least accrued twenty years (!) worth of feedback.

All thoughts and ideas welcome.

I prefer posting with Royal Mail.

I am very familiar with sizes and weights for RM and buy the postage online, where I print off the label. RM will also collect from your house, free, and they zap the barcode and you get an email confirmation of collection.

I've not done that yet as I'm unsure if the buyer would accept a screen shot of an email and it also shows your address.

Locally, we have had huge issues with Evri (parcels being lost) and I don't have a drop off point nearby.

I agree that Vinted has much lower prices. I am tired of people 'favouriting' items- what's the point? Either they buy or they don't. I can't be bothered with all the hassle of packaging up and taking to the PO for a sale under £5.

Likewise I don't like cheeky offers as I sell mid-high High St brands and want a reasonable / fair price.

I favourite items so that I can compare them later. And sometimes I offer on more than one of the same item and see who comes back to me first with the best counter offer then buy that. Vinted is basically a massive charity shop with a bit of haggling thrown in.

If your items are getting favourited then they are more visible to other buyers so its a good thing. Same if someone asks you a question or offers you a price, pushes your item up the listings so it does benefit you.

But that’s just how Vinted is. People liking items is part of the process as it offers and haggling.

Yes, but i find it annoying so dont think it is worth the bother of selling that way, i am just giving my opinion. I prefer ebay as it is a lot less hassle.

How is someone liking your item hassle? You don't have to do anything unless someone buys!

I don't see it as any different to people 'watching' your item on eBay. And people make offers on eBay too if you allow that option.

I would urge caution about Vinted selling for higher value items. They're not charging you fees so in my experience will do what they can not to compensate you and I have been badly screwed over by this.

I didnt say that liking was hassle. I said it was the contact of people making an offer , i accepted it then never hearing from then again, or one person made an offer , I accepted it then they came back and wanted to pay less. I dont want to haggle like this

jippy2s · 01/11/2023 07:42

I tried selling some kids Vans on Vinted and was inundated with "would you accept X" messages, felt like Facebook market place! Deleted the item and only used it for buying since.

Fearnecuptea · 01/11/2023 07:51

I like Vinted as a buyer- easy to use, loads of bargains to be found from brands like Cos, Arket, M&S, Whistles.

As a seller I hated it! Loads of people putting lower offers in, then asking for delivery in 2 weeks, 3 weeks time (Vinted only allows 5 days I think it is for the seller to post). Thus ensuring multiple back and forth messages about when to deliver. Selling items as "good" and the receiver complaining that said item isn't essentially brand new. Omg people messaging with non stop questions about a £2 item, with info literally available for them to see in the photos or on description.

So, I absolutely cannot be bothered to sell on Vinted anymore for limited profit.
I do however, appreciate other people listing so that I can buy their second hand bargains! 😂 I am a (IMO!) straightforward buyer tho, don't ask irritating questions, ask for ridiculously low discount etc.

I ‘favourite’ items because I only buy things when I have credit in my Vinted account. I can go back later and buy them when I’ve sold something or if they reduce the price.

I also always make offers because I am buying on a platform where this is possible so I will assume that it’s been priced to reflect negotiation. If a seller doesn’t want to negotiate then just decline the offer.

As a seller I much prefer it. I only use Inpost because I can put it in a locker on the way to work so I’m not making extra journeys. I’ve had a couple of things go missing as a seller and a buyer but always got money back.

underneaththeash · 01/11/2023 08:34

I just price things to sell and ignore offers (I don't have notifications on for offers and favourited items).

Only sell with evri and inpost where I can use the lockers and only iron things which are on there for more than £5, I make around £100/month.

YogaLite · 01/11/2023 09:17

Marking place as need to do a clear out.

NoNeedToHurry · 01/11/2023 09:20

Vinted is so easy to use as a seller! I'm only selling low price stuff but knowing exactly how much you are making on each item makes it feel worth it even for the small amounts - it all adds up and it's quick and easy with the inpost or Evri labels. I'm loving it. Not sold anything high value yet though 🤔

tommika · 04/11/2023 15:05

@bruffin
It is a thing that I had to learn with Vinted that everything is presented in a message format.

All the person has done when ‘liking’ an item is to click the ‘favourite’ button to mark it. They may be vaguely interested, seriously interested or even just watching your item as they have a similar one that they may sell - but the Vinted system flags it in a ‘message’ format with “Hi, I’m username” plus a notification that they have ‘liked’ it

The offers method is annoying, in the Vinted world it’s treated as an enquiry with “Would you accept £x”, whereas in the eBay world an offer is an offer - the buyer still may not complete via eBay if you accept but eBay will have treated it as offer & acceptance, therefore a contact to buy - and removes the listing
Under Vinted it’s enquiry, response, option to buy at the enquired price - and until that option is acted upon the item is still listed (I have had at least one occasion where I responded to accept the offer but the prospective buyer then either moved on or was too slow and another buyer purchased at the original price

When I started on Vinted and received my first ‘offers’ I would get out the item, wrap it and if I was going away for the weekend took it with me to enable me to post when paid ….. and then waited and waited

I use both eBay and Vinted, I put particular items on one or the other depending on the type / category of item and the price someone may pay.
Vinted has some convenience that I can list and leave it there, and also that fees don’t pile up - eg Vinted take their cut from the buyer on the sale price but leave the postage, whereas eBay take their fees from the sale plus postage, which can impact more on what people are willing to pay

Elseybee · 06/12/2023 22:48

Why do you say not to offer Royal Mail? It's the only option in my area!

Elseybee · 06/12/2023 22:48

Why do you say not to offer Royal Mail? It's the only option in my area!

It’s personal preference / circumstances

Depending on the weight/size of a package Royal Mails actual prices vary across different weight ranges

In Vinted when you list the item the system asks if it will be small, medium or large.

When the buyer selects a courier those match the carrier options ( and Vinted give you a prepaid label)
When the buyer selects Royal Mail the amount is included in your payout, but for the cheapest weight in that size range.

It will be simpler for you if Royal Mail is your only option - check what amount you are likely to be paid for that cheapest option. If your package fits those specifications then that’s fine, but if not then up your asking price if needed to ensure that you get paid enough.

I did get caught out selling a cheap item and ended up only with pennies after topping up the postage. If it had been a more expensive item then there would be scope to top up

Personally as I can send with all other carriers it’s simpler for me to disallow Royal Mail on Vinted, which means I don’t get caught out

(((On eBay I prefer to offer Royal Mail and Evri as they are the nearest options to my house and I set the postage amounts - I actually offer ‘free’ postage but take the right amount into account on sale prices )))

tommika · 07/12/2023 15:16

For some sellers, if money is tight then with Royal Mail on Vinted you fund all of the postage up front as Vinted keep the payment until the package is received and approved by the buyer

Therefore a Vinted seller who is struggling and using it to make some money may not be able to afford to post by Royal Mail, thus needs the prepaid courier labels

Clothesdonkey · 08/12/2023 16:47

I don’t use Royal Mail as it would be too inconvenient to get to a post office around my working times. With Inpost/evri/yodel I can just put it in a box or drop into the corner shop on the way home from work.

Cherrysoup · 12/07/2024 21:46

I use both. EBay doesn’t now charge for selling 2nd hand clothes. sold something on both platforms yesterday. Vinted is useful in that you can hide items if they look like they’re selling elsewhere.

Drizzlethru · 12/07/2024 21:53

Vented is easy but the buyers are often ridiculous in haggling . E,g, a hardly work, great condition kids item from Boden up for £3 as seems to be going rate, and everyone says can I have it for £2 etc
