A bit stuck! Please suggest a lovely holiday destination for our family

We are thinking about booking a family summer holiday and are a bit stuck for ideas. Or have loads of ideas but don’t know where is right. We love our holidays and really don’t want to get it wrong this year. Here’s us:

Me, DH, DD14, DS12.
Budget up to 5/6k for 10 days.
We’ve never booked a package, just book independently. Don’t mind SC or hotels. Like a lake or pool to swim in, not bothered about things being luxurious.
We can drive or fly.
DC consider organised fun for kids abhorrent, so AI resorts probably pointless.
We normally do a busy cultural holiday at Easter so something a bit more relaxing, but still with interesting stuff to do.
This Easter we are driving around Andalucía. So maybe not Spain in summer too.
Favourite summer holidays have included the Dordogne, Amalfi coast, Cape Cod and The Alps. Loved Languedoc last year, but really, really struggled in the heat.
Open to anywhere we can afford, even if it’s a bit leftfield!

Any ideas would be amazing 🙂

Azores ! Temperate and loads of amazing scenery. Different islands to visit. Only down side is the food which is very plain

Pula in north Croatia is lovely. Lots to see and plenty of water parks nearby.

Historic areas of Turkey? I have only seen a bit but I was impressed at the history there.

We’ve had several amazing holidays on lake Bodensee in Germany. Beautiful setting, great ferry network across the lake make getting to other towns/cultural stuff really easy and very pleasant way to travel. Germans do leisure centres and activities around the lake perfectly.
Good food, great beer, excellent cycle paths everywhere.

Near Evian. We stayed in Thollon Les Memises. Awesome holiday because there is tons to do. Evian pool is warm 50m and there is a lovely slide down a hillside into the lake. The tour round the bottling factory is a must. Further in land the St Bernard museum and kennels (if you like dogs) are fab. There is also a really weird crocodile place which is rather oddly funny. Fabulous castle round the lake on the Swiss side and the ride on trains at the village before that are great.

Sud tirol is lovely - my favorite bit of the Dolomites, you can do via ferrata, some very tragic WW1 history to explore and some odd WW2 stuff. Wonderful walks and MTB riding and I love speaking German but being in Italy. I like Aosta for the same reasons (well French obv but yswim), plus you can get cable cars up the mountains there and walk or ride down. Plenty of great agriturismo in both regions. The region I want to explore but haven't is round to Trieste and the border with Slovenia too. The Julian alps are on our list and wd probably be a bit cheaper than Italy.

Great suggestion 🙂 FIL has a house in Thollon-les-Mémises so we’ve been many times and it’s gorgeous, and like a second home to our kids. Although how on earth did I never know about the St Bernard kennels? I’ll be straight there next time we visit!

Denmark? Easy to travel round by train, lots to see, lovely beaches. Slovenia is lovely as well though have only been there in winter

I'd recommend a cruise. It's a great holiday with teens. Choose a family friendly cruise line, MSC or Royal Caribbean and a ship with lots to do.

Constellar · 05/02/2023 14:05

Lake Garda?

RobertsRadio · 05/02/2023 14:10

Norway, Sweden, Finland. All beautiful in the summer, with loads of lakes, forests, great walking and cycling trails and comfortable summer temperatures.

LeapingCat · 05/02/2023 14:16

I’d go for Northern Europe or somewhere high in the mountains if you’re concerned about heat. In August there is increasing risk of extreme heat events across southern Europe, even places like Germany and the Netherlands have had a lot of fairly extreme heat in recent years. Norway or Sweden might be good choices.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/02/2023 14:43

Watching!! This is us too!

CottonSock · 05/02/2023 14:44

Save 4-5 grand and go to West Wales.

CottonSock · 05/02/2023 14:45

Although san Sebastian area is lovely and sensible temperature in August. We'll it was when we went.

That was one of our first thoughts. But the main thing putting me off Scandinavia and even Ireland is the cost of everything! Maybe I’m worrying unnecessarily?

Another vote for Slovenia - so beautiful.

MissAmbrosia · 05/02/2023 17:45

Tatra Mountains and Zakopane in Poland. Day trips to Krakow. Auschwitz if you are up to that, or the Salt Mines are amazing. Morske Oko - cable cars, funiculars, lots of walks. White water rafting.
