It's just been delivered and he never saw anything except photos and descriptions 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

DH who is good with cars says the clutch is going (£800) timing belt needs changing (£350) looks like it's never been serviced (oil like treacle) and has advised stepson to demand his money back.

Car cost £3500 and is 10 years old. It does have a 3 month warranty and 14 day cooling off period No idea what that actually means in this case as the car was delivered from a long distance.

Paid by credit card in full, but paid a deposit of £350 by debit card.

He doesn't live with us so wanted to be independent and not ask his dad!

What's his best option.

Return it! That's what the 14 days is for; you actually have more rights than if you bought a car you've seen.

Either return the car under the cooling off period or use the warranty.
Is it a private sale or through a dealer?

Return it.

Three month warranty means nothing. Stamp hard on the 14 day cooling off period!

Ds1 bought a complete dog from a nearby garage but managed to get most of the purchase price back from WBAC. Took him a couple of hours hard staring and he still lost out on what he'd paid for the repairs plus some.

Iizzyb · 04/02/2023 21:14

This is exactly why there is a 14 day cooling off period. Reject the bar car now & ask for refund.

pinkfondu · 04/02/2023 21:15

They rely on the warranty to fix the shot they know is there. Must use tge cooling off period and try the credit card company as covered by them

lady725516 · 04/02/2023 21:17

As the car is faulty on delivery he actually has a 30day cooling off period and a right to a full refund. Send it back and chalk this one as a life lesson!

Dealer.

Use the cooling off period and get the money back. Buying online means you have more rights to return it and they have to refund you.

If the dealer is reluctant to take it back , mention that it was misrepresented in description. When was last mot? Does he have a copy of the ad? Cc can also be useful to reclaim.

It's supposed to have an MOT but no paperwork was sent with the car, so I'm not sure if it does have one.

It's definitely going back.

Stepson paid £1000 cash as a deposit, he has stopped the finance though. He won't return the car unless his deposit is repaid, but I know it all gets dodgy.

You can check mot online, including any advisories.
