If you were me, would you go to Turkey for weight loss surgery?

I know two people who have done this very recently and they are so happy with their outcome.

21 stone
36years old

Never had an op of any kind.

Sick of trying to diet

Very very tempted but rather terrified of the whole thing

Not in a million years

pinkfondu · 04/02/2023 18:58

No. Look at the long term stories. There are some very good blogs on TikTok

Gymmum82 · 04/02/2023 18:59

Nope. Not even in the U.K. My friend had it done. She’s dead now. She was 45.
It seems like an easy fix but it’s not. A complete overhaul of diet and lifestyle is the only way to lose weight and keep it off

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 04/02/2023 18:59

If something goes wrong, then what? You'll rely on NHS to sort you out?
Unless you have proper back up plan to cover for everything including if something went wrong, I wouldn't.

polkadotpixie · 04/02/2023 19:00

Definitely not. I've worked in Bariatric Surgery and I've seen too many people come through that have had botched procedures in Turkey

Doyoumind · 04/02/2023 19:01

No way - for numerous reasons.

Tiredmum27 · 04/02/2023 19:05

A lad from our town died from complications following that surgery in turkey, from what I understand his heart failed shortly after surgery. It was a nightmare for his parents to get his body home and was it really worth it for saving a couple of grand?

TubbyByeBye · 04/02/2023 19:07

I've had gastric sleeve surgery on the NHS. About 3 weeks after the op I became very ill with serious complications. I managed to make it in a taxi to A and E and they took one look before I even got to reception and rushed over to me.
It was horrendous. Loads of tests and cameras shoved down my throat. X-rays and drips. I ended up in hospital for a week before I was safe to discharge.

What will you do if something that happens to you? Can you afford the private checks ups if it does?

I'm still very glad I had the surgery but would never contemplate going abroad for it.

A family friend died following having liposuction in Turkey. Not worth it at all. Please don’t do this.

Chowtime · 04/02/2023 19:10

Do it. I did. It'll be fine. Do your homework first and find a good surgeon they often come to London so you could go and see them first then if you want.

Chowtime · 04/02/2023 19:12

See the thing is, most of the people who are saying "don't" haven't actually had the procedure themselves.

Most of the people who are saying "do it" HAVE actually had the procedure themselves.

Theres facebook groups and all sorts you can join to talk to people who've had it done.

Tamarindtree · 04/02/2023 19:13

No. If something goes wrong you are stuck abroad.

Shoemadlady · 04/02/2023 19:14

A friend died after surgery in turkey. Speak to your GP here for support and go from there x

Shoemadlady · 04/02/2023 19:16

If you have the money, you'd be better spending it on a personal trainer and changing your lifestyle too it will stand you in much better stead in the future

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 04/02/2023 19:16

Are surgeons less qualified in Turkey then or something?

Why would botches be any worse than the UK?

Saxenda can give you similar outcomes to WLS, have you tried it?

ChesterCheetah · 04/02/2023 19:20

I had a tummy tuck, which became infected after about ten days. The private aftercare was incredible (and didn't cost anything) and I can't imagine what state I would have been in had I only the NHS to rely on.

I was seen every 2-3 days for about 12 weeks, they phoned me in between to see how I was, they spent time researching the best healing options. None of this would be available on the NHS or from a hospital in another country.

Honestly, it's a hell of an undertaking. You couldn't pay me to do this abroad.

justasking111 · 04/02/2023 19:21

Friend had surgery in September, went back for tightening in November and January. The weight loss has really slowed down which is normal. There's unpleasant side effects at the beginning, you need to be able to discuss with someone and visit if necessary. So no I wouldn't risk it.

SpaceMonitor · 04/02/2023 19:22

What have you already tried OP? Why are you resorting to major surgery?

berksandbeyond · 04/02/2023 19:25

I wouldn’t. You didn’t gain the weight overnight so why would you expect to lose it overnight? It’s the laziest way out and teaches you nothing.

xJoy · 04/02/2023 19:26

just read this yesterday

I wouldn't if I were you. Save a bit more and have it in the uk.

That's interesting @WhatNow40 why have I not heard of that?

bugaboo218 · 04/02/2023 19:30

No. I had weight loss surgery a few years ago in The UK.

it isn’t as simple as just having the operation. You need to ready psychologically too. I had assessments, counselling and dietary advice before the surgery went ahead.

It is life changing physically and emotionally for life and you have to be able to cope with that.

coping isn’t always easy, for example for years I could not enjoy the odd fizzy drink because the bubbles. I can now have a very small fizzy that has gone flat now.

If you relapse and have something you shouldn’t not eat early on then you will get sugar dumping and that’s nasty!

Go ahead and have surgery if you wish, research and please do not have it done abroad. The risks are not worth it .

LadyKenya · 04/02/2023 19:30

You would be better off dealing with the root cause of your overeating. That may include having therapy. It is not a quick fix, but would be more beneficial to you in the long run.

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 04/02/2023 19:31

The worst part about dieting is the torture of being miserably hungry all the time
