Luckily the downstairs loo is completely separate from the rest of the house, it's a front extension with just the loo and entrance porch. Just been to the loo and something is up in the roof space. I'm thinking rat, it's bloody loud! Dh doesn't seem to concern as says he will look tomorrow

😬 yes, maybe a rat 🤢. Let us know when you find out!

princesssparklepants · 04/02/2023 18:22

Squirrel.... we get squirrels in our roof sometimes. They will chew their way in.... prob the noise you can hear

Muchtoomuchtodo · 04/02/2023 18:23

Maybe a squirrel. My parents had one in their loft and it was a pita.

anyolddinosaur · 04/02/2023 18:23

Squirrel - tree rats? Is it in the roof or just on it, might sound the same. Chicken wire to block off any holes once you have it out.

NewBootsAndRanty · 04/02/2023 18:26

Tooms.

Squamata · 04/02/2023 18:27

Rats, squirrels, mice, birds?

Depending on the pest, and the age and layout of your house, they might be in other places too. Look round for smells, droppings, chewing etc.

HashBrownandBeans · 04/02/2023 18:28

We have starlings roosting in ours, have been there years

ThomasWaghornsConeHat · 04/02/2023 18:28

I'm hoping there is some kind of visible hole it's got in on the outside. Otherwise it's got to be a rat that's gone up a cavity wall which means that the house isn't safe from them. We live next to a derelict house that some developers are letting rot as they won't to max out houses they can build on the plot. There was lots of trees but the developers took then all out. However the owner had hoards of rubbish in his garden and the developers didn't clear that, so a rat seems likely.

The house isn't that old, 69, 80 maybe. We did a extensive extension a few years back.

The starlings that nest in my eaves have started tidying up their nests. Such a racket!

ThomasWaghornsConeHat · 04/02/2023 19:16

Oh god I hope it is a bird!

OP posts:
Tangerinie · 04/02/2023 19:19

Oh it could be birds! We do get big pigeons scratching about on our roof and making pigeony noises.

FenghuangHoyan · 04/02/2023 19:20

Yeah, it's probably birds. Rats and mice tend to be quieter when they hear humans, birds don't give a toss.

ThomasWaghornsConeHat · 05/02/2023 13:32

It's a rat! There was a open port leading to nothing left by the builders so it looks like a rats come up from the sewer and found it's way up the wall. Urgh

Tangerinie · 05/02/2023 13:34

Oh no op! Hope it's easily gotten rid of 🤞🐀

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/02/2023 13:35

Did you see it? If you block the hole do you think that will sort it?

ThomasWaghornsConeHat · 05/02/2023 13:59

There is rat poop in the roof cavity. We are putting traps out and putting a cap onto the sewer opening. I just hope it's the one with no nest as they could in theory climb up any wall inside. I haven't heard it before. Weird that room has started to smell really bad over the course of a year so I'm wondering if it's gone undecided until last night. My parents had a 2 foot rat move into their kitchen when I was a tenn. It was only caught by hand in the end. They are very very hard to catch or poison
