Tutor for child with 22q11 deletion (DiGeorge Syndrome )

Hi all, I've NC for this one. I'm posting here in the hope of more traffic than subject specific boards.

Basically, I'm looking for a tutor for my DD (15) who has this deletion and is struggling to achieve in exams. Day to day she's fine, getting high marks, but it seems to be falling apart in exams (she's just done mocks). GCSEs are rapidly approaching and I'm desperate for a tutor with specific experience in teaching 22q11 deletion children.

I should add that she's at a private school so benefits from smaller classes and increased support. Plus we also pay for all the support they offer outside of general education.

She's really disappointed with her grades. She worked so hard and diligently and deserved higher grades as she proves in day to day lessons.

Absolutely any help at all would be massively appreciated. TIA.

Has her school applied for extra time? It's not necessarily going to help but it's worth asking. It's not going to help for GCSEs but it's worth looking at btecs in the future because assessment
Is gradual

Are there Facebook groups for parents of children with the same deletion? I wonder if you might have more luck there.

I would also suggest that you focus on finding a tutor who is experienced in helping kids with all sorts of different learning styles and needs, rather than looking for someone with this specific experience which could be difficult to find. A great tutor should be able to do their own research and help find an approach that works for your DD.

I’m also wondering - have you considered a therapist for your DD? If she is typically achieving well in school but is struggling only in exams, I also wonder if it’s more anxiety driven or focus-driven than content-learning driven. Maybe she would benefit from learning some self-calming and recentering approaches.

I’ll caveat all this by saying I have zero experience of your DD’s specific deletion, so apologies if anything I’ve asked about is way off base!

Thank you so much! You've suggested some things that wouldn't have occurred to me. I will definitely be investigating.

Yes, she has extra time and a reader for some exams.

Surely the deletion has nothing to with tutoring ,my son has 16p13.11 micro deletion he's massively impacted by it ,and has severe autism and learning disabilities because of it but other people with the same deletion have few if any issues
Maybe ask in the Unique rare chromosome ,Facebook page ,to see if other families are in a similar situation?
