I feel like we are at the point where Mummy is too babyish but Mum feels too grown up!

My 14yo still calls me mummy, but dad is definitely dad.

LawksaMercyMissus · 04/02/2023 08:01

Cincinnatus · 04/02/2023 08:02

My youngest is 9 and has been calling me mum for a couple of years.

Think I've always been Mum, find Mummy a bit cringey tbh (especially when spoken by adults in a posh accent 😂)

Spaceprincess · 04/02/2023 08:04

My grown up DC still call me mummy, I like it.

Okaaaay · 04/02/2023 08:05

My DD was two!!! I was so gutted. She’s now 6 and mostly calls me mamma (which is better than mum)

Never if you’re Prince Harry.😜

seriously though, my parents INSISTED that we call them mummy and daddy (narcissistic ideas of status). Not allowed mum and dad (‘common, low class’, apparently). I hated it when at secondary school. So embarrassing. I now call my parents by their first names, so it sort of back fired.

My kids, mummy turned into mum in secondary school, sometimes still mummy at home, but I make a point of eg referring to their dad as ‘dad’ when I’m public, to not embarrass them. I really had horrible memories of the title ‘mummy’ because of my mum! I’m just glad my best mate at secondary was Irish, since she didn’t laugh at me because of it (as above, often an Irish thing, no ponceyness involved). Right, off to breathe 😆

Same with me. I found it excruciatingly embarrassing bringing friends home from school and would try and avoid asking my parents for anything while friends were there in case I had to call them mummy or daddy. Once I called my mother 'Mum' in front of a friend and she condescendingly replied 'Mummy if you please'. I'd already suffered bullying at school and this was just another stick for the other kids to beat me with. My parents knew this but refused to allow a name change.

With my own kids, it was a natural progression from mummy to mum around late primary school. They still call me mummy sometimes at 25 and 23 in a jokey way though!

Mamma or Maa (Maa is hindi for Mum), have never been called Mum or Mummy, oh wait, my youngest uses a mixture of Mamma, Maa and Mam'za.

newtb · 04/02/2023 08:16

My dm became Mother when I was 12, otoh my df was Daddy until he died when I was nearly 31.
Was in the nw and he was from Sunderland, called his df Father.

(I’m a secondary school teacher and there are Y7s who definitely still call their parents mummy and daddy to their faces, but refer to them as mum and dad when talking about them.)

This is exactly my Y7. We still refer to ourselves as Mummy and Daddy, though. I thought we'd have moved onto Mum and Dad by now, as I was about 5 or 6 when I stopped with Mummy and Daddy, but we're still here, and after almost 12 years, it is just a natural thing for us to say now.

I was reading said Y7s messages when he was at the end of Y6, and one of his friends had sent to the group chat 'mummy and <sister> are arguing'. Thought it was interesting that he'd comfortably used Mummy in front of his friends. No one said a word about it, so it may have been a common thing in that cohort.

Dc1 was about 10 when she switched.
Dc2 was about 5 (so before Dc1 switched as Dc1 was 8 at the time) but went through a stage about 10-15 calling me Mamma (she was into old books)
Ds about 8 or 9 out loud, but used to still call me Mummy in texts. He sometimes calls me Mother, normally when he wants something.

Headstones250 · 04/02/2023 08:20

Since they were teens I've just been plain old Headstones. Not sure how it happened but I like it much better.

YoungMouse · 04/02/2023 08:22

Caribbean family here. We all still use mummy and daddy.

Fishlegs · 04/02/2023 08:23

My 11 yo only calls me Mummy when she wants something, otherwise it’s Mum with an eye roll.
My 8 yo has always called me Mama which I hope won’t stop anytime soon.

daffodilandtulip · 04/02/2023 08:23

I'm still mummy to 17 & 14 yo. Son shouts motthheeerrr in a silly high pitched voice if he's commanding my attention from upstairs 🙄

Saschka · 04/02/2023 08:24

Six year old varies between Mamma and Mummy. Occasionally tries out “Ma”, fuck knows where he got that from, I feel like a hillbilly when he calls me that Confused

BelleSauvage9 · 04/02/2023 08:26

Dd11 (yr 6) calls me a mix of mummy and mum, but only uses mum when around her peers.

Astrabees · 04/02/2023 08:26

I don’t know. My sons are 28 and31 and still call me mummy. I always called my mother mummy though too.

watsthecraic · 04/02/2023 07:22

Never if you're in Northern Ireland!

I noticed that and yet in the Republic only "posh" people would use Mummy.
It's usually Mam, Mum ( or Ma which I personally hate Smile ).

watchingpullimgepisode6 · 04/02/2023 08:28

I'm in Wales so I get Maaaaaaaammmm

GreenMarigold · 04/02/2023 08:28

I am ‘mummy’ to my 8 yo and ‘mama’ to my 5 year old. Neither has tried ‘mum’ yet!

Emmamoo89 · 04/02/2023 08:28

I'm 33 and still call my mam mammy

Beezknees · 04/02/2023 08:28

DS was around 9 years old when mummy stopped.

Mariposista · 04/02/2023 08:29

Never been a fan of ‘mummy’, reminds me of posh people/aristocracy. Although I do refer to myself as Mummy RE the dog hahahaha

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 04/02/2023 08:30

My 11yo has switched overnight to Mum and Dad, considering she’s now taller than me it was probably for the best. Or “Muuuuuver!” when she’s bellowing for something…
