Nicest places in north west?

Looking to move out of Cheshire, am a renter by choice and single after ltr ended. I would prefer to stay in this region, although depends where.
I have lived in Hebden Bridge previously although it’s a bit of an outlier in relation to pricing and arts, but don’t really have any urge to go back. perhaps a bit too pricey at the mo.

Any decent places to recommend? Don’t want to be too urban but not too rural either. Love south Cumbria and some areas in Lancs, and can go to visit for a while prior to moving. I wfh so no commuting issues. I like arts, nature, painting, animals, stuff like that. I have relatives near Wigan who say most towns/areas around there are a bit neglected now, although that is Greater Manchester I think……so I’m a bit out of touch. Any advice welcome!

Thanks everyone. Although I could push a few more hundred I really don’t agree with most prices currently so am gonna stay firm on that. I have generally located lovely places via agents as opposed to right over, so will keep searching!

kendal is ok, not sure though, i always feel a bit depressed in the rain. Rufford is lovely but likely too expensive, and also a touch cut off. I agree that the Lakes sounds good in theory as i love the diversity and excitement of tourism. Dunno!

Right move, not right over Grin

Lancaster is lovely. I lived there for years and would go back in a heartbeat if I could. There’s a lovely little terrace/cottage on St George’s key up for rent within your budget (Sorry, not IT savvy enough to post a link)

Humdrum123 · 03/02/2023 21:21

Lancaster, and Morecambe too. Eden project will give Morecambe a boost and Lancaster is already great- loads going on.

Agree Ribble valley is lovely however it’s pricey. A previous poster mentioned Penwortham which is a good shout. Small but lots going on and other areas in South Ribble also nice eg Longton.

Lytham also a good shout but expensive.

Altrincham is nice.

But stupidly expensive. £9.00 for a glass of wine in the market, I can but two from Aldi for that!

There loads of outlying villages round Lancaster
Hornby Bentham , burton In Kendal is 5 minutes from m6

BlueHeelers · 03/02/2023 21:29

Lancaster’s very doable on your budget.

FTM2022SS · 03/02/2023 21:49

Billinge is lovely and technically Wigan!

Plantagenette · 04/02/2023 01:11

Been offered a lovely house on Grasmere road in Lancaster, at 600pcm. Probably because I know a friend Of the owner.
fo r give typos my iPad is shit.
i think you have to look a bit further than right move.

Oh wow I once lived on billinge! It has changed a lot over time. We had horses there when I was a kid. Lots of good memories.

Far out from Liverpool and nowhere near Birkenhead is all I'll say. From experience.

You would really struggle to find much in Formby for £795, possibly even anything decent in Wigan tbh.

There’s loads decent in Wigan for under £750pcm

Ormskirk/Aughton is lovely. Good schools too. It’s very close to Wigan but not like Wigan at all.

Not in OPs budget for rents though

Perfect location, with added fitness benefits of walking up Dalton Road!

Having a quick search on Rightmove and knowing the area well, everything within that budget is definitely in the type of area the OP has expressed she’s not interested in.

Going a bit further out means somewhere like Ormskirk/Aughton which a PP has quite rightly pointed out would be outside the OP’s budget too.

MaisyMary77 · 04/02/2023 09:06

Grasmere road is nice. Good area and it’s within easy walking distance of the town. Also close to Williamsons Park-a lovely place to wonder around.

MaisyMary77 · 04/02/2023 10:34

*wander! Although Williamsons park is wonderful! 😁

Plantagenette · 04/02/2023 10:42

I’m familiar with Ormskirk, cant see the appeal at all.

Im also not prepared to normalise an overinflated rental market - no one in a modest, single person property, especially an apartment should be paying over £700 per month, unless they’re in a major city or very select area. I am far from poor so god help those who are struggling when we are acting as if my budget is ‘low’.

Barrowford and Fence (both east Lancs) are nice villages/towns.

bookish83 · 04/02/2023 19:21

Barrowford is a good shout, amenities and rental price wise too you should get a 2up/down or one of the apartments there.

SouperNoodle · 04/02/2023 19:30

There are some beautiful areas on the Wirral

Nutrigrainygoodness · 04/02/2023 19:39

The lakes is lovely when it's dry. Kendal is a bit miserable all the time though 😂
Just having a nosy through estate agents. Ambleside seems to be upwards of £750 😬😬.
