Do movies filmed in the first person make you sick?

They usually come with a warning that the motion of it, can cause motion sickness.

I’ve watched a few like it, and been fine.

Tried to watch Cloverfield today, but within half an hour, I got seriously nauseous and had to turn it off.

Um. No….

I started to watch one set on a ship - can't remember what it was called but it was about a pirate radio station - and had to stop because the swaying was making me queasy.

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 03/02/2023 07:25

They do.

its got worse over the years. I think I've had an issue with BPPV (type of vertigo) for longer than I realised.

even scrolling the sky menu too fast can make me feel sick.

I used to LOVE theme park rides, just looking at them now makes me feel sick.

drives me nuts!!

'The Boat That Rocked'? 😁

That's the one, thank you!

I had to leave a Christopher Nolan Batman film ten minutes in because it made me feel so ill.

Formerglorystory66 · 03/02/2023 07:36

Yes they do op! Certain screens can make me feel really sick yes. My old main frame computer screen. Watching short snippets of video on a cheap tablet. Weirdly, the IPhone doesn’t do that but I don’t watch full length movies on my phone.

I also have had PPPD in the past from so am wary of not being on screens too much but I have always been very prone to travel sickness.

It does get worse as you age, and a lack of oestrogen can make you even more dizzy in menopause and your balance can get worse, so it’s important to get exercising to prevent this. Dance moves with spins are good! As is bending right down and up again. You can practice this while cleaning base of loo and sinks and skirting boards.

Soubriquet · 03/02/2023 08:44

Glad it’s not just me.

It’s a shame reslly. The film has good reviews.

Might try it again another day. See if I get the same result

I've not seen a whole movie like this but I suspect it would.

I found when practising for my driving theory test, there were loads of video clips online or on DVDs you could buy to work on the hazard perception part of the test, and it was all filmed from the driver's point of view. I hated them as I'd feel quite dizzy and a bit sick at times if I did too many in a row. Even on the real one, I felt a bit queasy after that part of the test. Driving itself is fine, so I think it's the fact that the perspective clearly showed something that should be moving, and I wasn't, and that confused my brain!
(I did get quite motion sick as a child, and even now can feel queasy in back seats or really windy roads or whatever if I am a passenger).

GingleAllTheWay2022 · 03/02/2023 09:55

Me too! And it was Cloverfield that made me realise. I had to leave the cinema, I felt seasick after about 10 minutes. Tried to persevere but it just does something to my brain!

PatientZorro · 03/02/2023 09:57

I’m ok with them but my DH can’t watch them at all, they make him feel really sick. It’s not just you OP!

HerGrapeness · 03/02/2023 10:14

I'm normally ok with 'found footage' type films but tried to watch Hardcore Henry when it came out and had to stop after about 10 minutes as it made me feel so motion sick.

ArianahX · 03/02/2023 10:14

I can't watch them because of my epilepsy

It's awesome.

autienotnaughty · 03/02/2023 10:19

Yep I had to leave cinema for Blair witch. I'm better at home as can look away but still makes me nauseous so I don't bother.

LtMoose · 03/02/2023 10:19

Yes! I absolutely cannot watch any of those films in the cinema, because they make me actually vomit (sorry gross). On very small screens I can watch them but I have to look away a fair amount. It's a shame because some of them are really good.

Soubriquet · 03/02/2023 10:22

The last film I watched like it, I can’t remember the name.

It’s about a family of 4. Mum, dad, brother and sister.

The sister has a video camera and is filming the day to day actions of her family.

We slowly see her father losing control on reality.

The last parts of the film, the dad murders mum and son, thinks he’s managed to kill his daughter and then kills himself.

I can’t remember what it’s called though

Cloverfield gave me a hideous migraine with sickness....

Soubriquet · 03/02/2023 10:27

Ah found it!

Exhibit A it’s called. Thank you Amazon for keeping a “watch it again” list.
