Packed lunch with no overnight refrigeration

Please help me with some ideas here. Lots of back story but basic situation is this;

DS is 6 years old and allergic to milk. We have a holiday coming up and I'll need a packed breakfast and lunch for him. I won't have a fridge overnight or cooking facilities in the morning.

We will be at an airport for breakfast and on the plane at lunch time.

Experience has taught me that finding something beyond crisps / fruit at an airport that he'll eat is impossible.

He doesn't like ham or eggs.

I'm taking some vegan croissants for breakfast but I can't give him those for lunch too ... can I?

On the way home we've ordered the children a meal as it will be over tea time and chances of finding suitable food in that airport are even fewer. Don't really want to order him a meal for the way out too as £££ and there only 1 dairy free choice. Plus that also comes with chocolate and cheese crackers which can't be substituted (I've already asked and pointed out the issue to the airline)

So any ideas?

Thank you :)

Crisps and fruit it is! He'll be fine.

Lentil63 · 02/02/2023 20:45

Nuts, dried fruit, freeze things and keep in a small cool bag.

bookish83 · 02/02/2023 20:45

Ice packs could work but that is a long time so id probably skip that

Options:

Breadsticks
Vegan porridge pot and use hot water on the plane. Breakfast for lunch!
custard pot/fruit pot/alpro pudding
Crisps
Brioche
Croissant
Fruit
crackers

they sound disgusting to me but a pepperami?

B - instant Porridge and fruit. Croissant
L - Peanut butter sandwich, ambient dairy free milkshake, banana, Crisps, Crackers

onepieceoflollipop · 02/02/2023 20:51

Crackers and dairy free spread (dairylea equivalent - quite processed so probably fine overnight not in fridge)
buy smoothie or dairy free milk base drink at the Starbucks or equivalent in the airport?
free
pot noodle type snack and obtain hot water from cafe or bar at airport

Twizbe · 02/02/2023 20:51

I hadn't thought about porridge in the room before we left ... we might have time for that. I'd like that too.

Then could save the croissant for lunch.

He loves peanut butter but not sure about taking on the plane just in case.

The question is ... will he eat porridge

(He's also a tad on the fussy side - though thankfully will eat fruit and veggies)

I think what is considered a normal/socially acceptable breakfast needs to go out of the window here. The aim is for your child to not be hungry and have fun on holiday.

I'd forgot the airline meal (or only have it as back up) as inevitably airlines screw up special diet meals. They will serve up a 'vegan' mean with a side pot of dairy yogurt & it'll make you doubt whats in the rest of it for example.

What does he normally have in his sandwiches?

How about crackers, breadsticks, jelly, crisps, mini cakes, banana, apple, biscuits, (cereal bars if you know of any dairy free ones)

Buy apple juice at the airport/on board?

handsoffate · 02/02/2023 20:55

Rice or corn cakes with jam or dairy-free chocolate spread?

WestOfWestminster · 02/02/2023 20:56

Or Can you take a few weetabix and soya milk?

Candleabra · 02/02/2023 20:57

Please don’t take peanut butter on the plane.

Mammyofonlyone · 02/02/2023 20:58

You're not going to be able to take food through security with you though are you? I thought you could only buy food once you were through ie your supplies would work for breakfast but then you would have to feed him with what was available airside, be it from the lounges or the aeroplane depending on where you were?

I wouldn't. It's not worth the risk to someone else.

You can take food - I only discovered that last summer! It's just liquids over 100ml that you can't take

Twizbe · 02/02/2023 21:03

@WestOfWestminster this is so true. When I asked them about the cheese cracker and chocolate their only alternative was the adult vegan meal. My son is practically vegan some days but he is not going to eat something that grown up.

Sandwiches are usually peanut butter (no) humous (no because of the sesame) or marmite. I could do a marmite sandwich. I guess that might be ok unrefrigerated. We're going straight from school so it would be about 10 hours ...

I might do him a larger snack pack than his sister. She eats everything so I know we can get her a sandwich at the airport.

On a plane we once took some off those snap pack baked beans which my milk-allergic daughter was happy to eat at room temperature.

This ⬆️
My (fussy) DS also has severe CMPA and in these kind of circumstances we forget about nutrition and concentrate on calories. You don't want a hungry/ratty child on a plane. Take bread and make a crisp sandwich, plenty of dry snacks like banana bread, biscuits, fruit, breadsticks, a plain tortilla wrap. Carrot sticks will keep ok for a few hours. Dairy free chocolate brownie etc. Happy travels!

Mammyofonlyone · 02/02/2023 21:03

@Snowdropsarelovely well, you've just improved the next few flights we've got booked......thank you!!! I can't believe I hadn't checked this out for our last few holidays!
Thank you

Stopdropnroll · 02/02/2023 21:04

It's a while since I've had to deal with allergies but some of the sorreen malt loaves are milk free and they do mini ones, from memory the original ones have milk but not others such as the strawberry ones. Really easy snack to have in a bag and one of those and some fruit would be fine for brekkie or snack after lunch.

I'll try to remember what other easy stuff I used to get, we were dealing with milk, soya and egg

Over the summer we did a shorter flight and both kids had a ton of snack food in their hand luggage.

Peanut butter sandwich will be fine in the airport if you don't want to risk it on the plane.

underneaththeash · 02/02/2023 21:07

I used to take a small cool bag with snacks for the plane - I have/had a hangry one. It had fruit - pineapple pieces/bananas/satsumas, crisps, breadsticks, sausages, sandwiches, raisins, pepperoni.
It was fine.
But you can obviously have breakfast in the airport and get pancakes to fill them up>

WandaWonder · 02/02/2023 21:08

Can you buy small carton non -milk milk? To take with you

bellac11 · 02/02/2023 21:09

ofertas.iberiaexpress.com/gastrotecaexpress/IBEX_BISTRO_DESKTOP.pdf

If you scroll down there is a snack box, one has hummus and apple jam, another had salami, breadsticks, pate, more hummus, olives etc

They were delicious. Id love to buy them for my lunches! They were quite small so not too high in calories and really tasty

No refrigeration needed
