I’ve just moved into a place with central heating and I’ve never had this before (lived in Aus). It’s an oil boiler. The landlord has said that the most cost effective way to run it is to keep it on all the time, but low rather than turning it up and down.
My question is - if the heating is on, but we turn the radiator itself off, this will use less energy? The house is actually really warm so I’ve got the thermostat turned to about 18 and then the radiators either off (bedrooms as we like a cold room) or on 1-2 which keeps them lightly warm and is heating the house fine.
Then when I got up this morning I just turned the radiators in the living room and kitchen up to maybe 2-3.
Would you agree that this is a good way of keeping the cost down? Presumably even if the system itself is “on”, if the radiators are on low or are off, it won’t be using much oil?
thanks for helping a newbie!
