Is it worth getting a Nectar card?

I only shop at Sainsbury's occasionally, mainly for non-food items, so I've never bothered with a nectar card. Last time I looked it didn't seem worth it for the hassle of carrying an extra card and the loss of privacy in having my shopping habits tracked. But I know these things evolve - Tescos has started doing significant discounts for its loyalty card holders recently, so maybe Sainsburies does the same Can anyone summarise the benefits for me?

It's one of the worst cards in terms of points, you get barely any and each one is only worth .5p so they don't add up to much but the nectar prices when you use the self scanner are worth it. Like Clubcard prices but specifically tailored to what you buy so you get some good discounts on regular purchases.

I tend to convert my points to cafe Nero vouchers via the reward partners section of the app. 350 points gets you any hot drink whereas that same amount is worth £1.75 in Sainsburys.

I also use the Stocard app for all my loyalty cards, but I CBA opting in to offers in individual apps.

Like you OP, we hardly ever shop in Sainsburys but we do get quite a lot of points due to petrol, Argos and eBay spending. I currently have around £35 of points that have built up over a few years that I'm reluctant to use because, last time they did the November double up, I only had a few points so couldn't take part and I don't want to use my points, in case they bring it back. I used to use them to get discount TTD sparkling wine for Christmas.

But I'm planning a trip to Sainsburys on Saturday, because there's a points event on where, if you spend £20, you will win some free extra points. Most people will only get a quid or two, but it could be up to £25 worth.

I actually disagree we spend thousands of pounds in sainsburys yearly and get very little back. They used to do a double up scheme for booze at Christmas which was worthwhile but no longer. The endless little coupons are very annoying
that said I now have a digital card on my phone wallet so no card to carry and when using the self scanner am def getting some discounts.

I don't live near a sainsburies but have nectar card, most of my points come from fuel and ebay purchases.

I have all my cards on an app called 'Stocard' Brilliant app,i use it everyday.

I think it’s good, I convert the Nectar points into Avios points for BA flights

I really like Nectar. As an example, today I did a top up shop - spent £21 and earned £2.00 worth of bonus points by using the app and self scanner, plus the usual points you earn per pound spent. Not a bad return, and the bonus points offers are always on things you buy regularly. I also use my card at Argos and lots of other online shops.

I used to save up my nectar points throughout the year and spend them at Argos for Christmas. A few years back we essentially got a Nintendo 3DS half price doing it that way.
(I don't tend to go to Sainsbury's these days so don't do that now)

We save up our Nectar points all year to pay for our Xmas shop .

Squamata · 02/02/2023 19:55

I think it's borderline worth it. They get all my fricking personal data for a year and I get about £10 at the end of it.

BodyShapeWoes · 02/02/2023 20:17

Mines linked to my eBay account and argos account (I used to use eBay a lot) one year I had over £200, also when I had cat insurance I used to get points added as well so it mounted up quickly

however we no longer live near a Sainsburys so I don’t regularly shop there (that and it’s very expensive), I do love the clothes so may do a trip and dh used it for petrol but that’s it.

think I have about £15 points left

pinksquash13 · 02/02/2023 20:43

I've recently opened a nectar credit card and I think if I spend £2000 on it in 3 months, I'll get £100 worth of nectar points. I'm then going to close the card. Might be worth looking at if you are sensible with a credit card.
