Would this put you off new job?

I’ve been offered a job that pays quite a bit more than my current job. In interview they said it was subject to a 6 month probation period and you needed to get sign off in 4 key areas before you passed. Also mentioned some people flew through probation and some people had it extended. Worried I might not be good enough and then let go. I’ve never had a role with a formal probation period before and it is stressing me out a little.

Probation is perfectly normal.

If you’re looking for a job that doesn’t have one, you could be looking for quite a while.

Timeforabiscuit · 01/02/2023 16:44

No not at all, in fact I'd see it as a huge positive that you know really clearly what the competencies are before you start.

Just as long as you have regular feedback on how your doing through the period and what they are asking for is reasonable and clear, then it's fine.

Bogeyes · 01/02/2023 16:45

Take the chance. You will regret it if you don't.

Sounds normal. Go for it

MsNorris · 01/02/2023 16:48

Totally normal, I’ve never had a job without a probation period. Just make sure you are clear on the goals upfront and ask for feedback on your performance so you know well in advance of any skills gaps.

Gloriousgardener11 · 01/02/2023 16:49

Well if you've been offered the job they must be as certain as they can be that you are a good fit so give yourself a pat on the back.

Probationary periods are very common, you will do your best to comply and they will do their best to support you.
Trying to recruit the right person for a position is a time consuming minefield !

edwinbear · 01/02/2023 16:49

All jobs have a probation period, but not all employers are so open and transparent about it. The fact they've been so up front about the process and expectations, I'd take as a huge positive.

Lolachu · 01/02/2023 16:51

Thanks I think I’m just worried because of the 4 competencies I’ve only done 2 of them before. It feels like a huge leap into the dark. As much I want to believe I can do it, I’m also a single parent so really need to be sure before I leap.

Probation is normal. 6 months is longer than usual but don't forget it works both ways. You can leave them with the short notice if you wanted to.

Lolachu · 01/02/2023 16:53

In my current job no one mentioned a probation period to me. I am good at the job and I enjoy it. Maybe it would have come up if I wasn’t. If it wasn’t for the cost of living crisis I’d happily stay where I am. I’m not a natural risk taker which I think is adding to my anxiety.

Well that's even better, you're clear about where you are, and what you need to learn. New jobs are supposed to stretch you, and it sounds like your going in with a brilliant mindset of I want to be great at this job.

Honestly, you've got this!

idonotmind · 01/02/2023 16:56

What are the other 2 competences? Can they be learnt?

Thatsnotmybee · 01/02/2023 18:11

Go for it. If you've done 2 of the competencies before you're already half way there. Believe in yourself!

Oblomov22 · 01/02/2023 18:18

I would find that concerning. 3 months is standard, 6 months is longer, but if people aren't passing probation and it's being extended then I'd be questioning why.

calico13 · 01/02/2023 19:58

Mmm 6 months is longer than standard. I'd be a little concerned they stated that some people didn't pass. Not everyone passes probation but it's odd to mention it. It might indicate unrealistic expectations or a tough work environment.
Make sure you are really clear on expectations with the company especially in this economy.

Lcb123 · 01/02/2023 20:01

Sounds normal to me. Your manager should be working with you from the start to plan how you’ll pass probation. My job has 2 years probation!

lalalalahahaha · 01/02/2023 20:18

I've just moved jobs and I'm not really enjoying it's so honestly just make sure it's what you want. I regret moving if I'm
Honest

Youcangoyourownwayyyy · 01/02/2023 20:36

Don’t know of many companies that didn’t have probation
do you have concerns you won’t meet the probation requirements?

Lolachu · 01/02/2023 21:23

Well, I suppose my concern is that I know I’m good at my current job. New job is the unknown. And If people are having probation periods extended that’s concerning. Why aren’t they passing! Is that a question I can ask without coming across as fearful and a bit meek. (Appreciate I am those things but don’t want new employer to know that!)

Starseeking · 01/02/2023 23:54

My last 4 jobs have had a 6 month probation, it's fairly standard.

Just make sure you do your job and deliver, and you will be fine.
