Blocked ear

Shamelessly posting for traffic

I've had a blocked ear since the end of last week. One ear is really bad, the other feels blocked but not as much. I don't think it's wax related, possibly sinus related as I've been feeling pressure across the bridge of my nose. I've also tried the wax removers and nothing.

I've looked at decongestants but they all seem to mention blocked noses which I don't have, although I do have a bit of a sniffle.

Would it be worth trying anyway? Already spent a small fortune on wax treatments so loathe to buy loads more things if they dont work.

Any other suggestions?

Decongestants are recommended, esp if you have other symptoms eg sinus issues. If tubes are blocked after being poorly it can take a few weeks to clear. Have you tried steam inhalation? With or without some Vicks in the water could help. Popping your ears, yawning etc are all things suggested in the ‘self care’ section. It might be worth someone checking your ears though. Wax removers don’t tend to work instantly. Try olive oil in your ears -it’s recommended daily for 2-3 weeks to see if it softens and shifts wax. I used to do ear syringing, we wouldn’t even attempt it if olive oil hadn’t been used for a couple of weeks. Some wax removers/sodium bicarbonate melt the wax so much it can drop right down to the bottom of the ear canal rather than work it’s way out. Maybe see if the practice nurse can have a look and check your ears?

Drop Warm oil in the ear - and let it soak in by tilting your head - for a week then go see the nurse and she can check for a blockage and irrigate it if needed.

Ive been using the wax liquids since it happened and nothing, they are all coming out clear

One small thing you can do straight away is open your mouth really wide and hold that position until you feel mucus at the back of your throat. Then swallow. Do this a lot. I think it's to do with helping the eustachian tubes clear & it does work.

I thought ear blockage wasn't covered by NHS anymore? I know specsavers do ear wax removal but it's 50 pounds.

Sounds like cerumen impaction. If nothing else has worked I would strongly suggest having them professionally syringed. If it's sinus related, maybe antibiotics are needed to solve both sinus and ear issue.

I'd go and have microsuction just to check there's no build up of wax causing the block. Ear drops don't work or take ages to soften the wax, you could be waiting weeks otherwise.
