What do you do after work?

Just that really. I work usual mon-Fri and I’ve got in a terrible of habit of putting my pjs on as soon as I get home and sitting on my bed watching tv. Sometimes when I finish early and having a lazy tea (teen DCs) I’ll be in pjs and chilling from 5pm but it’s almost every night now.
I need to get more active and do more. What do others do?

Before I had my baby most nights I would go to bed early, eat snacks and binge watch greys anatomy or gossip girl and paint my nails. Oh those were the days 😂

Whataplanker · 01/02/2023 08:51

In my head, I go straight to the gym. In reality, my gym kit has been in the car, unworn for the last 2 weeks and I have come home, had a cup of tea and sat very quietly until I muster the energy to start making the tea. Then I watch TV under a blanket for the evening, usually dozing off by 9pm. It's a rock 'n' roll lifestyle but I'm too tired to do much else!

KickingScreaming · 01/02/2023 14:18

I work 2 days a week and on those days get home usually between 8-8.30pm, walk the dog then shower, pj's, cuppa and a light "supper" then catch up on chit chat and perhaps late night movie with DP.

before anyone chips in here about animal welfare DDog, is well looked after, I leave for work in the afternoon, and DDog isn't home alone in any case.

PompomDahlia · 01/02/2023 14:22

On days when I can be bothered, I’ll go to a gym class or go swimming. There’s a radio show I love, so often listen to that whilst cooking dinner and cleaning the kitchen. Then sit in front of the tv and play on my phone.

Trying to be better about going out and doing stuff, or doing some project work (painting the spare room etc) in the evenings not just trying to cram stuff into weekends, but it’s hard to find the energy

4thonthe4th · 01/02/2023 14:22

You could do things with your Dc, see friends, go out for dinner, the cinema, for walks, join a gym, read, see family, do housework if you don’t have a cleaner, cook, bake, family game night, join a club…

mumto2teenagers · 01/02/2023 14:27

I'm similar to you OP, got into a bad habit of spending every evening after work watching TV and doing little else.

Some evenings I'll walk the dogs, but I am usually the last one home and with 3 other adults in the house often the dogs have already been walked or DH does it while I cook dinner, so even that I do less than I used to.

MirabelMax · 01/02/2023 14:29

I either run or go to the gym. Make dinner. Ferry kids around. Watch TV, read a book.
Nothing massively exciting!

MonkeyPuddle · 01/02/2023 14:31

I fuck about getting my non sleeping kids to sleep.

SnowAndFrostOutside · 01/02/2023 14:32

The gym after work. I love it.

maddy68 · 01/02/2023 14:33

I am fortunate that I don't live in the UK anymore so after-work I meet my friends for a wine or coffee next to the beach and watch the sunset before heading home
That's happens most days

stayathomer · 01/02/2023 14:35

I wear a uniform to work so I make sure when I get home to get changed into jeans so I’m not quite ending the day (after months of me getting ready for bed at half six or seven😅). I generally check the kids homework, put on a wash and sort stuff for the next day while dh does dinner ( I can’t cook)

JustFrustrated · 01/02/2023 14:35

Do a bit of cleaning, some jigsaw, cook tea, chat with the kids, watch TV, bed.

Getting back into the habit of going to the gym as well.

I'm perfectly happy with my evenings.

EmmaStone · 01/02/2023 14:36

Mon: cook dinner, ferry children to activities
Tues: cook dinner, review any jobs that need doing
Wed: exercise class, dinner
Thurs: exercise class, dinner
Fri: dinner, out with friends

Interspersed is school meetings, seeing friends, picking children up late from ad hoc things, food shopping delivery and ordering etc etc etc. I also have 2 inactive teens - there seemed much more when they were younger and had more activities on.

Depends on the day.. usually collect eldest from whichever friends home they've all piled into that afternoon, come home, make a quick pre training tea for her, drive her to trampolining, go and pick up the youngest from nursery and after school clubs (if partner hasn't already), take them home and put the tea on, do reading and spellings, have tea, 20 min of cocomelon and Minecraft, and then between me and partner 3x baths stories and bed, get the washing on and fold the other laundry, one of us goes to get the oldest (usually partner). I hoover and clean the kitchen then they get home, she has a post training snack, she gets a shower and then usually comes to pester about something she wants or money for something. Then she goes to bed and we finally chill and watch something on Netflix.

FluffyPJs · 01/02/2023 14:40

I usually get home from school by 6.30pm. If I'm lucky I'll have marked most or all of my books (I have to mark the maths and English books every day, and usually one other subject each day, so approx 90 books) before I leave school, but if there was a meeting I will have to bring them home with me. There's always something I need to do on my laptop, either assessments, planning, leadership stuff or just answering emails. Some evenings I'm done by 9pm, others I can be working til 11pm. The first thing I do when I get home is put my pyjamas on then I get comfy on the sofa for my evening of marking etc. I tried working at a desk in another room but that was lonely and depressing, I prefer to be in the same room as my husband and then we can watch tv together. If I don't have any or too much work to do, I tend to just lie on the sofa and watch tv. I'm too tired to go out on a school night and can't face something like the gym. I dream of a job where I can just come home and do nothing all evening but after 24 years and at almost 50 years old I can't see myself starting over in another job: industry.

Rebel2023 · 01/02/2023 14:41

Depends what time I finish
4pm ish - peloton, shower, tea takes me up to about 6pm. Then I game/read/watch TV and chat online to friends usually or go and do my food shop, mooch around TK maxx
6pm ish - peloton, shower so finish about 7pm so don't tend to go out when I finish then

Very boring

allsogreen · 01/02/2023 14:43

for many years I tried to make myself be productive after work. Then I realised I was just naturally much more produtive in a morning. So now I do most of what I need to get done in the mornings before work- washing, tidying. bit of cleaning, life admin etc... 2 mornings a week I also fit in a run before work- will soon by getting that back up to 3 (has dipped a bit since starting a new job) I work till 6pm so dont get in till 6.30ish. After dinner I just chill quite happily. Chat with the teens if they are feeling sociable (not often!)8 pm usually do a bit of a sort out for the next day, tidy bedroom if needed etc...then bed at 9 and read till around 10. up the next day at 5.30 or 6 am, out the house for 8 am. Seems to work much better for me than trying to fit stuf fin in the eveneings.

Insideallday · 01/02/2023 14:45

Walk the dog every evening. Swim 2 evenings. Make dinner most evenings. Always seems to have Laundry to do. Then pjs by 9pm and tv watch

blobby10 · 01/02/2023 14:54

Feeling much better after reading some of these responses that its not just me struggling to do anything after work! My children all live away from home so its just me and the elderly cat - washing up and clearing up takes 5 minutes, max 2 loads of washing per week . My excuse is the cat is old and wants affection and is on her own all day so I really ought to sit down and cosset her. In reality I just don't want to go outside again once Im home! I tried playing my saxophone again but it upset the cat! Hopefully in a few weeks it will be warmer and lighter in the evenings so I can start doing stuff in the garden - the definition of 'stuff' will hopefully become clearer over time. I should be repainting my kitchen and doing home improvement stuff but just haven't got the energy.
