Little moan about the strikes…

DC has likely ASD and ADHD, year 2. His cohort I feel has been really affected by Covid as it is.

His school is 3 form entry. In the whole school only 3 classes are closing due to strikes - his class, one of the reception classes, and then one year 4 class. They’ll be closed on all of the four strike days while the rest of the school carries on.

This isn’t a direct attack at teachers striking, they have their reasons.

But I’ve just had to deal with a meltdown from my DC because we’ve booked him into (expensive) childcare for the day, we have no family nearby to look after him for the day and we can’t take time off work. His little sister is going to reception as normal so makes it very tricky for him.

I wrote to school asking if anything could be done for him on the strike days given he has SEN, and was essentially told “theme the breaks”.

I’m not interested in the “well if you care about your SEN child then you should support the strikes” because I’m dealing with the here and now, today, and a further four days where my SEN DC is going to feel the impact of the strikes. Whilst the vast majority of his school is able to carry on as normal.

Let’s see if that even remotely takes off.

Reconvene in 6 weeks?! 😂

Winchester staff are striking

Has anyone seen the civil service graph today? Turns out senior civil servants have had a worse real terms pay cut than teachers!

And they’re striking, good for them

Ok I didn’t read it, glad someone picked up on that

I love it that civil service including DfE and Ofsted were also striking today.

I don't understand the "reconvene in 6 weeks" comments but I am pretty sure these issues are going to rumble on for more than 6 weeks and I find it highly relevant and encouraging that private school teachers are starting to join unions and in some cases strike too.

A great day for collective action today.

I mean on this thread

because i very very much doubt that there will be anywhere remotely close to widespread independent school teachers striking

Whatislove82 · 01/02/2023 19:02

And you seem to think different

hence why I suggested… reconvene!

Postcovid · 01/02/2023 21:39

Thanks everyone who has been kind on here, regardless of views. My DS seemed to have an ok time at the holiday club, but has said he doesn’t want to go again which is a shame as it’s running on the next strike day in less than a fortnight’s time. He needed a lot of down time afterwards (mainly staring at his screen!).

Glad he had an OK day. My DS always seems to have a decent time at holiday club (but needs screen time afterwards and can have meltdowns for little things, the usual) but still says he doesn't want to go again and protests if I ever say I want to book him in again. All rather stressful and guilt-inducing, but sometimes we have no choice. Flowers

Oh I see! I thought you were referring to something in the article.

Yes, I'll be watching with interest as I'm sure you will too.

Have a good day

A great day for collective action today.

were any changes agreed to or pay demands actually made yesterday to make it a “great day”?

No. I think it would be a bit unrealistic to expect changes to happen on the same day as the first day of strikes wouldn't it.

Yup

so you can’t yet say that it was a “good day”

as quite possibly it results In squat all 😂

40,000 marched in London and protests all over the country, it was a great day

Whatislove82 · 02/02/2023 12:22

How can you say it was a “great day” when you don’t know the result?

if all the strikes come to nothing, it wasn’t a “great day” surely?!

Postcovid · 02/02/2023 12:25

Nothing has come from the rail strikes yet has it? They have been going on for so long. I used to get the train to work but I drive every time now as it was just so unreliable.

Postal strikes have been going for a while too. Not sure if anymore or if I’ve missed them

Rainbowsandbutterflies1990 · 02/02/2023 12:37

I have a SN child in a special school. Her teacher was part of strikes and my daughter didn't go in. I was teacher before I stopped after having her and not able to go back and I fully support them. I was very happy to hear my daughters teacher was off as it must have been a difficult decision. My younger daughter class teacher is in same union but choose not to strike(didn't tell me directly but got impression it was from pressure from parents and head teacher) I told her I would have supported it and will in future.
Going through process of getting ehcp for my oldest and having to wait to see if we got a special school was horrific and the cuts to education I have seen first hand from when I was working in schools to also what I know about the SEN world. I also know what a shambles SEN provision is in. The goverment need to start funding schools and SEN more. And I can for the future , yes its an inconvenience and my daughter was bit confused (non verbal so unable to tell me or explain and understand) but it's 100% needed.

Rainbowsandbutterflies1990 · 02/02/2023 12:39

Wanted to add my youngest daughter 's teacher didn't tell my why she didn't and was no way unprofessional at all. Just I just a feeling it was that why she didn't.
