Rude translation of baby name - does it matter?

Living in England, and my lovely English friend has announced she's named her daughter Cala. I belive its Spanish for river....
However it's also Welsh for dick. (As in rude word for penis), and lately I've heard it used more as slang for dildo

Chances are friends daughter will live blessed life in Southern England completely unaware. But what if she ever moves to Wales.... or goes to a Welsh uni? Or in these blessed days of internet kids in school look it up?

Do I tell her????

Well if you want to.
To be honest I'd be worried if I was living in Wales but otherwise not really.
I guess other people might think about these things though. But no I wouldn't worry about it personally if I wasn't in Wales

AndyWarholsPiehole · 31/01/2023 22:34

I'd tell her.

determinedtomakethiswork · 31/01/2023 22:35

The Spanish word for river is Rio. Cala means cove.

I would certainly tell her if it meant something rude.

Luredbyapomegranate · 31/01/2023 22:36

Sure.

I doubt she’ll be bothered, but good to know

LastOfTheChristmasWine · 31/01/2023 22:36

I'd tell her. It's Welsh - and she will certainly come into contact with a Welsh speaker at some point. She could even live in Wales. It's not like it's a tribal language from Papua New Guinea.

TheOriginalEmu · 31/01/2023 22:37

No. I’m a first language wean speaker and it’s not a common word for it really, chances are no one is ever going mention it.

WELSH speaker…. As you can tell by my English today 😒

Catnary · 31/01/2023 22:39

Nah, the kid will have enough on her plate already explaining to everyone that “No, it’s definitely not CaRla, it’s Cala…”

saraclara · 31/01/2023 22:40

Has the baby been registered yet? If so, I'd let it lie.

SD1978 · 31/01/2023 22:42

I wouldn't. I have a friend with a child whose name means something quite different medically, but it would serve no purpose to mention it, and it wouldn't in this case either. They dont live in wales so a word that according to an actual welsh speaker who has replied, isn't that commonly used for the word dick, living in a country (England) that doesn't use that word, serves no purpose- apart from being a bit of a one yourself.

ThatsSubOptimal · 31/01/2023 22:44

I dunno, plenty of guys survive living in Scotland being called Willie 🤷🏻‍♀️

Septemberbeginnings · 31/01/2023 22:44

South Wales first language Welsh speaker here and I haven't come across this word.

I'd agree but heard one of the young cool kids use it for Dildo quite recently. Which is why it came to mind so quickly. Saying that my Welsh is dodgy at the best of times, nevermind when trying to be cool in front of a teenager...

Poor little Chlamydia.

Tamarindtree · 31/01/2023 22:47

As long as their surname isn’t Minelotion I wouldn’t bother telling her. Most parents google name meanings anyway.

EzzieM · 31/01/2023 23:34

I wouldn’t tell her, no. You’ll spoil her excitement at her baby’s name and for what? Don’t wanna be rude but I’ve only been to Wales once in my life and don’t plan to go back (nothing against Wales but I just prefer Italy). No one outside Wales speaks Welsh. Harshly put, it does not matter to an English girl what her name means in Wales.

Also not sure how you pronounce Cala but if it’s the same as Carla that’s already a common English name.

SD1978 · 31/01/2023 23:36

@Catnary 🤣🤣🤣

FrozenTodger · 31/01/2023 23:38

1st language Welsh here and never heard that! What part of Wales?

devildeepbluesea · 31/01/2023 23:38

I speak Welsh, never heard it before. South East born, lived in South West. Not used in either place. This isn’t an issue IMO.

Lilliflip · 31/01/2023 23:40

@Catnary 🤣 if I had been drinking tea, I’d have done the proverbial spit out at that.

MrsMikeDrop · 31/01/2023 23:46

I don't see the point if she's already named her
