What do you like eating when you have a sore throat?

And what actually helps it?

My throat is feeling horrible, my whole face hurts and I'm exhausted by today. I've got batch cooked Bolognese in the fridge but I can't think of anything worse right now. All I can think about is chippy chips with lots of salt and vinegar and how nice it would feel on my throat. What I probably need is some kind of soup and injection of all the vitamins going.

Ice cream

over50andfab · 31/01/2023 20:03

Heinz lentil soup and Walls vanilla ice cream.

MintJulia · 31/01/2023 20:03

warm lemon barley water

userxx · 31/01/2023 20:05

McDonald's cheese burgers, takes no effort to eat.

Rebel2023 · 31/01/2023 20:05

I've had tonsillitis so many times I've lost count
Salted crisps - scrape the crap off your throat and the salt helps
Porridge
Warm drinks but nothing acidic
Custard
Soup, but not tomato (stings)
Basically anything warm, bland and mushy!

ShinyPikachu · 31/01/2023 20:05

Porridge. Especially the golden syrup flavoured one. I prefer hot foods to ice cream when I'm ill and it keeps me full so I'm not hungry.

Ice cream

This is the correct answer, was even recommended to me by a doctor. Ice lollies are good too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/01/2023 20:08

Custard
Bread pudding from Spar, ideally with custard
Bread and butter pudding - with custard
Heinz tomato soup with loads of black pepper, from a tiny mug
Rice pudding
Custard tarts and slices

Basically, custard then.

I can remember being given crisps in hospital after having my tonsils whipped out, apparently they help stop scabs forming 🤢

Marcipex · 31/01/2023 20:17

Ice cream
Finely diced frozen fruit sold as a cereal topping. My Tesco one is mango, pineapple, and strawberries.

DinDjarin · 31/01/2023 20:18

Salt and vinegar crisps or crunchy toast. Probably not the healthiest or best thing to eat!

I think you're not supposed to drink anything too cold or too hot.

MudLady · 31/01/2023 20:20

I woke up feeling awful this morning with this bug too. I made some soup yesterday, by chance, so had that for lunch, I like soup, & make it a lot. Usually I have bread & butter & honey, drink lemonade or hot blackcurrant juice with honey & lemon, just survive on throat lozenges. CBA making proper food when I'm ill.

I like the suggestion of ice lollies, I'll put some into freeze now I think. I have squeeze pop silicone moulds from IKEA, they're fab.

Nedmund · 31/01/2023 20:22

I had cheese and onion crisps when my tonsils were taken out. I never liked them before but had missed lunch and was hungry. My mum had a bag in her hand at the time and I've liked them ever since.

I actually remember a GP telling me to eat lots of ice cream as an adult and ran with that suggestion. Unfortunately, I'm soy and dairy free for DC of 6 months.

I always drink lemon, honey and ginger, sometimes cayenne too, is it bad for a sore throat?! I always feel a tad boosted for a bit after but don't know if it's psychological.

I had this bug last week and didn't really feel much like eating. Survived on co-codomol and lukewarm cups of tea. 😊

Nedmund · 31/01/2023 20:23

Same here Mud, I must have had an inkling I was going to be ill as I made soup over the weekend and finished it for lunch.

Cider

Shampern · 31/01/2023 20:24

Melon chunks. And frozen mango pieces.

gracewitt · 31/01/2023 20:25

McDonalds milkshake through a straw - goes straight to the back of the throat and really soothes.

Greatly · 31/01/2023 20:26

I had a horrific sore throat with Covid last year. I ate nothing but Ben and Jerry's ice cream and waitrose orange sorbet for three days.

Mykittensmittens · 31/01/2023 20:27

Pineapple. Tinned and cold. Or fresh. And juice.

there is actually some science in this. My DGF was an ENT consultant and he used to go on about enzymes in pineapple (and papaya if I recall) doing something helpful for throats?!

Funkyslippers · 31/01/2023 20:29

Following this as I have a throat that feels like it's on fire! Off to get ice cream out of the freezer. Get well soon x

If it helps, the pecan and caramel Hackney gelato is plant based
Also delicious as I ate the entire tub before realising it was dairy free Grin

cushioncovers · 31/01/2023 20:41

Ice cream and apples

Nedmund · 31/01/2023 22:47

@Rebel2023 I couldn't see any online without milk in sadly Sad

DH very kindly went out for me. I went with the chippies but he did manage to get a vegan ice cream and I've washed it down with fruit & barley squash. V healthy Grin

I'll have to work on the vitamins in the morning. I wish I could have more than paracetamol though, the pain has spread down my neck and body and I feel like I've been hit by a spade. Off to bed for me!
