Toy storage shelf/bench for child's room - does such a thing exist?

I am looking for a long low-ish bench for along the wall in my child's room. I have in my mind some sort of toy box height shelf but to go along the whole wall, and ideally a bench style that could have toys such as lego/playmobil set out on top of it with space underneath for boxes of books etc . At the moment the lego playsets are just laid out on the floor so my child has to lie on the floor to get down low enough to play with them, never mind the nightmare of lifting all the toys up when it comes to hoovering!

Seen things like this

but this is free standing for the middle of a room, whereas I am looking for something that could run along the length of a wall. Plus I'm ideally looking for something cheaper!

Apart getting someone handy to make one, does such a thing exist anywhere?

What about an IKEA kallax unit? They do one that is one box high/wide by four the other way. here
Just lie it down instead of standing it up?

NuffSaidSam · 31/01/2023 13:31

They must have something of this kind at IKEA?

DecemberCroc · 31/01/2023 13:32

Oh now that does look good, thanks. I felt sure Ikea would have what I was picturing but couldn't see anything when I had a quick look.

Just despairing at having to lift up every last bit of playmobil etc to hoover and then being told off for not putting it back as it was!

Thanks for suggestion!

IKEA have lots of options.

WhiteFire · 31/01/2023 13:32

I was going to make a similar suggestion to above.

My ds has the 4x2 unit on its long side, DD has it on the short side (I got them from Argos)

We have used these as lego tables. There is a drawer for it as well

IKEA Trofast? www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/trofast-storage-combination-with-boxes-white-white-s69228473/

I think you can get shelves for these units as well if you want display type storage.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions everyone. I'll need to check heights and widths on these as it's quite a small room and would need to be the right height for kneeling down to play on them, but these look perfect! Like the idea of shelves underneath for other bits.

IKEA kallax seems the obvious thing to me too. Trofast might even work, there are some lowish units.

If you want something deeper for play, you could just tack some MDF on the back, brace it forward a few inches and put a bit of worktop on the top going back to the wall.

If you want to go even deeper you can actually put 2 sets together, one in front of the other, and have one fabric cube visible and another hidden behind it but accessible by removing the first cube. Perfect for toy rotation but perhaps more suitable for the smaller version, Flysta, unless you want a really deep bench. Most other DIY type places have similar cube type storage these days but the IKEA ones are really solid.

For the 4 x kallax unit, you can also buy a stand and door/draw inserts.

Or this kind of idea could work really well scaled down to toddler height. Mine never really played on raised surfaces unless they could get their feet or knees under them - it's just not so comfortable. So maybe a table style shelf thing with boxes of toys under, maybe on wheels, and a couple of toddler chairs would work

We have this. Works brilliantly.

The kallax is ace, we had 2x4 as a book/box storage for years, but from 7 we put it upright and it's more bookshelves and for her Lego displays.
