How’s the Lake District these days?

I haven’t been for a few years now but used to pop up there quite a lot pre covid.
Usually I didn’t mind the mad weather and tended to take my work with me and chill out for a week or so. As travelling alone I preferred the towns as opposed to remote spots so that everything I needed was at hand.

Last time I was visiting I was in Windermere and Ambleside, it seemed a bit less relaxing, the small streets booming with engine noise although not particularly busy people-wise. I’d go between November to May, so at the quietest times. There were lots of sirens and just a lot more clatter than usual.
I know vehicle noise is increasing everywhere, at least in terms of modded or just very loud engines. This was always a pain on country roads but it seems to have made its way into residential streets too. Last time I was up there the engine noise was pretty intrusive - I’m presuming cars are just manufactured louder now?

Not noise averse in general and can happily live with parties, construction, kiddies and other general merriment but loud engines that shake the walls not so much.

How have you people found the Lakes recently ? Is it less relaxing in your opinion or different in any way post pandemic? Has the World heritage status thing made it busier? If I’m after a relaxing spot maybe somewhere less touristy?

We stay outside of Keswick...we've not gone to Bowness or Ambleside for years (too busy even before covid). We usually pick quieter places to go anyway so we've not found any difference.

A work colleague went to Bowness just after covid and he said the restaurants had bouncers it was that busy!

Thanks, that’s interesting. I used to love Windermere because it was so quiet in winter, i love that kind of vibe, the scenery and silence.
my cousin was there in autumn and said it was frantic and just worse, somehow, than previous years. It would be a shame if it goes downhill :(

I only go there in winter, on my own with work too. I'm going next week, I stay at the Lakes on Windermere.

It is really peaceful, I don't go in school holidays or the summer.

It is much busier than it used to be, there's no doubt about that.

Someone was stabbed in Kendal this week, in Boots. A few areas do seem to be getting rougher.

@LeatherSoledShoes yeh, I tend to avoid busy times. I have a soft spot for Windermere.
