I need Zometa injections, and I have been messaged to say to bring a letter from my dentist agreeing I can go ahead with this.

But I dont have a dentist and I am struggling to find an NHS one

Very grateful for any information. Has anyone got this letter before? How did you get it? What does the dentist have to do, and what should I expect it to cost? Can I just rock up to a private dentist I have never met before and ask them to examine me and give me this letter? How much should I expect to pay?

I have copied this from the Health forum as I didn't get any answers there.

I would be very grateful for any help and guidance with this, thank you

I'd contact your allocated cancer specialist nurse, tell them you don't have a dentist and ask them what to do. They should be able to refer you to the NHS dental service (probably in the same hospital) with the referral asking exactly what they need from them.

My OH keeps getting fobbed off between his dentist and the oncologist - neither seems to really know what to do. He needed root canal treatment, the oncologist told him to ask the dentist how much gap was needed between zometa infusions to safely do the treatment - dentist just told him he needed a specific instruction from oncologist as to a "safe" time frame to do it. It drove OH made as they just kept referring him to the other and neither would give a definitive answer.

Ultimately you will need a dentist as zometa can affect teeth and it's important to have healthy teeth and gums whilst on zometa.

Thank you for this message, its really helpful to see I'm not the only one who has had this issue, and for explaining a bit x

My oncologist gave me a form for the dentist to fill in to give the green light for zomata. I'm sorry it seems you're being passed from pillar to post.

Yes, you need a dental checkup and when booking it tell the receptionist what you need. If your teeth and gums are healthy the dentist will be able to sign you off, if you need any treatment such as extractions, root canal treatment or treatment for gum disease it will be recommended to have this done before you start the Zometa.
It doesn't matter whether you see an NHS or private dentist for the all clear. Check up prices are usually on websites and just check that there is no additional charge for the letter.
