Mould on car seat

queenqueefy · 30/01/2023 21:28

I haven't driven my car for quite a while. It's been sat on the drive.

I've been in it today and there's green mould that's grown on the back seat and over my son's car seat.

I'm not sure why this has happened. Can anyone suggest what to use to clean it and prevent it coming back.

Thank you Flowers

I think you can just take the cover off and stick it in the wash. If the straps are mouldy you will need to get them replaced- you can contact the brand for a replacement.

You can’t clean and get rid of the mould. The mould is in the seat and affects its integrity so it isn’t safe in a crash.

You need to throw it away and get a brand new car seat.

You need to replace the seat, sorry.

This happened to us recently. Managed to salvage one seat as it only had minimal mould on it but the other was absolutely covered. It was 3D in places. I chucked it as I couldn’t guarantee it wouldn’t still be mouldy in places. I’ve heard that white vinegar is pretty good for cleaning mould.

The problem is that anything you use that is harsh enough to kill mould is also harsh enough to damage the integrity of the car seat. Apparently mould itself can also cause problems with the integrity of plastics - this was news to me as I thought they were non porous.

Either way, probably best to replace unfortunately :(

Car upholstery spray. Look in Poundland or similar. Microfibre cloth. Spray, wipe.
If you can’t get upholstery shampoo spray use white vinegar on a cloth.
