My cat is 9 months old roughly.

He went for a heart scan today. He’s got HCM, a small hole in his heart :( they’ve started him on Atenolol and he needs to go back in two and a half weeks time to see how he’s getting on. Prognosis, vet is unsure. Some cats do well, others don’t.

Has anyone had the same with their cat? Can you share your experience?

Thanks

My cat was diagnosed with HCM & a dodgy mitral valve after a scan and overnight monitor at the RVC when she was about 4.
We knew she had a heart murmur but didn't have further investigations until she had a fainting episode.
She's 12 now & still going strong; she has atenolol twice a day (we push it inside a segment of those cat stick treats, and she eats it) but no other meds.

Thank you for sharing! She said he was likely born with it. She wasn’t sure on prognosis as she said some cats react well to medication, others don’t. Do you know the severity of the HCM in your cat? He’s on Atenolol once a day and then going back in two weeks for a check up.

I don't remember if they graded it specifically, but think it was mild-moderate.
They did suggest annual heart scans, but unfortunately DCat was so stressed by the journey to the specialists that, after discussion, we agreed to only rescan if she had further episodes. She hasn't had any so we haven't had her rechecked at the RVC, but our current vet did an in-house scan earlier this year prior to an anaesthesia and they didn't think it was severe enough to be a significant concern for the anaesthesia (and she got through two anaesthesia, for xrays and then surgery on her leg, without incidence).
