So when you answer a call and the person says ‘Hello can I please speak to your name?’

How do you respond..
‘This is she’
‘Yes that’s me’
‘yes speaking’

etc

I wad thinking about this the other day. I used to work with a colleague who said this is she, we could all adopt it as a way to announce our pronouns.

impossible · 30/01/2023 18:07

I say 'who's speaking?
Then if I'm not interested I say so.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/01/2023 18:08

"Who's calling" normally hotly followed by "I'm not interested thank you, good bye"

HagridTheGiant · 30/01/2023 18:11

A work:
"Can I please speak to HagridThegiant?"
"Speaking, how can I help?" (it's normally a client call back)

I don't usually answer unknown numbers on my mobile but if I do, I would say "speaking"

Campervangirl · 30/01/2023 18:13

"sorry, she's not here"
I know the numbers of people I want to speak to, I don't like unsolicited calls

Happygirl79 · 30/01/2023 18:22

I say "speaking " followed by "what can I help you with?" if I don't recognise the number . It puts telemarketers on the back foot normally and they lose their track .

MushMonster · 30/01/2023 18:24

Speaking, who is calling?
I am always me, I have not learnt from my previous mistakes yet LOL

WetBandits · 30/01/2023 18:24

If I’m expecting a call, it’s “hi, speaking” but if it’s a cold call, it’s “who’s calling, please?”

Ragwort · 30/01/2023 18:25

At work I usually get calls asking for the Manager (which is me!) but I try to work out what they want before admitting they are speaking to the Manager Grin in case it is going to be awkward! Years ago that almost got me into trouble, I ended up having a row with a customer following a difficult conversation and when they asked me my name I just made one up. Blush. It happened over 25 years ago and I can still remember the name I made up ... Tara Blandford ... might make that my new Mumsnet username.....

I had this phonecall today

Ring ring

"Hello, Charlotte speaking"

"Hi, can I speak to Charlotte Flox please?"

"It's Charlotte FLAX"

"Can I speak to Charlotte Flax please?"

massive eyeroll "Speaking..."

(I knew who was calling btw so didn't need to ask but might've done if it was an unrecognised number)

JustFrustrated · 30/01/2023 18:37

If I don't know the number "who's speaking please?"

If it's unknown but I'm expecting a call, e.g. doctors "speaking"

Generally I find cold callers ask to speak to me,
.people calling but I wasn't expecting but do know e.g. the optician/doctors/random school line will announce who they are e..g "hi it's Pauline from Specsavers, is that Michelle?"

Or

I got the other day
.
Hi, it's Miranda from the dentist. Can I speak to Henry" (Henry being my husband)

They got "yes if you call him on his phone you can"

Instead they disclosed everything to me and asked me to pass a message on .....

I'm not his P.A.....

BamBamBilla · 30/01/2023 18:37

Ask them who they are. I'm not confirming who I till they tell me who they are.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/01/2023 18:43

I say " can I ask who's calling please"
Then I will speak to them if I want to

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/01/2023 18:43

Depends.

In work, 'Speaking, how can I help you?' for external 'It's Moo, what can I do for you?' for internal if they've asked for me or I've picked up somebody else's extension and ''Sup, mate?'/'Before you say anything, yes I have tried turning it off and back on again' for the IT manager.

On mobile, if I'm expecting a call or it's from the hospital/GP/optician/etc 'Yes, speaking/oh, thank you for calling back'. If I'm in any way suspicious 'Who's calling please?' with a 'What's it about?' when my hackles are raising if they won't tell me.

My mother insisted that 'this is She' was the UC manner of answering. Sometimes I could swear that Hyacinth Bucket was modelled on her. Even if the reality was she was more of a Daisy house.

Spotsstripes · 30/01/2023 18:47

Depends- if they announce who they are say 'speaking'. If I don't know who it is I ask 'who am I speaking to?'

CharlotteStreetW1 · 30/01/2023 18:49

FatSealSmugSoup · 30/01/2023 17:39

Speaking. Don’t say “yes” speaking as they can cut the audio to make it sound like you said yes to whichever scam they’re calling about.

Better still, don’t answer. No good ever comes from accepting phone calls.

Well how else where DH and I meant to arrange our first date all those pre-mobile years ago? 😁

soddingspiderseason · 30/01/2023 18:52

"Who's calling?" I never tell them who I am until I know who they are.

Whatthetrolley · 30/01/2023 18:56

Are you me??? 😀

Iamblossom · 30/01/2023 19:34

AnonWeeMouse · 30/01/2023 17:31

"who's calling?"

"Gary From BT Internet, we have detected a fault on your computer"

"Fuck off Gary"

This made me laugh a great deal.

DuesToTheDirt · 30/01/2023 19:55

"Yes, speaking".

This is she - I've never used that phrase in my life.

CeriB82 · 30/01/2023 21:34

I don’t answer if their name doesn’t appear on screen.

easy.
