Does your tea/coffee go cold really quickly? Do I need a thermal mug?

I am finding that by the time I have drunk half my coffee, the rest is cold. I WFH and during the day I use a heated blanket to keep warm, rather than turn the heating on. If you have a similar set up, how do you keep your hot drinks hot for long enough? I am not a slow drinker, but I like my hot drinks fairly hot.

If the answer is a thermal mug, does anyone have any recommendations? I'm not keen on the long, 'skinny' ones, so ideally one that looks more like a mug, would be idea. Thank you!

LeCruiset mug does the trick for me. Keeps my tea hot much longer and doesn’t make it taste of metal!

What's your current cup/ mug like? Wider topped ones go colder quicker.

If I don't have long to drink my tea, I use my widest brimmed cup and it goes cold incredibly quickly.

Yeti do mug style thermal cups.

However, it could just be that you need to try a different style mug - I have ones that defo make for a better cuppa

I think if your house is cold, your kitchen cupboards probably are and that makes the mug cold. Try microwaving your mug before you put coffee in it.

Or warm it by pouring water from the kettle and then pouring out.

Yes, this, except I would find it easier to warm the mug with a bit of hot water.

Warm your cup before making tea with hot water. A thermal mug or even a heated USB coaster would work. Plenty of thermal mugs to choose from on Amazon just search for one with a handle. My local Tesco and Asda always have some in stock too

Usually something like this.

I find that bone china keeps my hot drinks warmer for longer. As others say, pre warm the cup and ideally, choose a taller/narrower style to limit the surface area for heat loss.

BigFatLiar · 30/01/2023 12:20

We started using travel mugs at home, we got them for when we were out volunteering. They're good if you don't drink quickly as the tea stays warmer longer. It can take me 30-40 minutes (or more) to finish a cup if I'm reading or watching telly, tea's still warm enough for drinking.

MNisMyGuiltyPleasure · 30/01/2023 12:21

Thanks for all the ideas. I will try those before buying a thermal mug and see if they help. It's such a waste of coffee and milk at the moment (although I do re-heat it in the microwave if there's at least half a mug left of drink).

I’d warm your cup first and see if that helps, as others have said.

If you do decide you want a thermal cup, I really like this one that I bought for camping:
Camaka Desk Mug, amzn.eu/d/iNeL4Dg

I don’t like the tall wobbly ones either - this one is big enough to hold a decent sized cup of tea or coffee, and it keeps it warm for ages. The lid has a small hole to sip through so it’s no use for travel - but I didn’t want it for travel. It feels quite nice to use. But I would always prefer a decent china mug at home.

Put a coaster on top of the mug to keep the heat in

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 30/01/2023 12:31

Bodem thermal cups are brilliant. I bought a few of these... Bodem coffee mug they keep them hot for hours.

If you just need it to be kept warmer for a shorter time then this plastic one is great Plastic Bodem thermal mug.

Abraxan · 30/01/2023 12:31

You can make it warmer longer by preheating your cup (same as you should with a teapot.)

At work I have a Chillys mug which keeps my hot drinks warm for a very long time!

BertieBotts · 30/01/2023 13:56

I have to preheat my plates because our kitchen is freezing due to a leaky window seal and the plates are also in a cupboard on an outside wall. I have an extra hot setting on my coffee machine, so I just use that for drinks, but that's why I thought of microwaving a cup! I eat slowly and it's really annoying to get halfway through dinner and it's freezing cold.

I use a thermal mug with a lid in winter. By the time I've finished farting about making toast, then eating said toast in bed, my drink was getting cold. Now it stays piping hot and I don't pre-heat it.
