Strange garage conversions

Garage conversions.

Has anyone had one where all you’ve done is completely bricked up the garage door and had no windows added at all?

What’s the attraction of making a completely windowless room?

One of our neighbours has done this.
DH and I can’t work out why he’d want a dark dungeon like room instead of a garage, but we don’t know him well enough to ask.

Could there be side opaque windows?
U can have eg windowless bathroom with just a vent.

QuertyGirl · 30/01/2023 09:40

Maybe it's actually a dungeon?

No, there’s no side windows.

The house is an end one, so I can see the wall of the garage when I’m walking on our road. The other wall joins onto the house.

DH was making jokes about that but would someone really turn their garage into a dungeon?

It might be a photographic dark room, or they might have just failed to get planning consent for conversion/windows/whatever.

But dungeon is definitely most likely.

Check the council website for the planning documents to see the purpose, assuming it needed planning permission.

It could also be some sort of workshop or have windows on the back of it or on its roof.

There's one like this near me. Home cinema/gaming room maybe? Pub type room with a bar and pool table? (though that one wouldn't really be harmed by windows)

YogaLite · 30/01/2023 09:47

Utility room/bathroom is my best guess, they wouldn't need a window.

I’m house hunting atm and saw similar online. Up and over doorcremoved, wall bricked. Back wall of garage was bifold doors and it was fitted out as a gym. Bifolds opened onto a shaped deck area at the side of the rear garden.

YogaLite · 30/01/2023 09:48

Or even linked to the rest of the house, eg extra long or L-shaped living space.

Pterrydactyl · 30/01/2023 09:57

See, I get why people might want to turn a garage into a gym or extra living space, but I’m struggling to see why they wouldn’t want a window as part of that?

There certainly wasn’t a window at the back of the garage when they were bricking up the door.

I’d somehow had the idea that garage conversions didn’t need planning permission.

Thanks for the tip.

I think the garage across the road is like this. I saw him fitting it out as a gym over the summer. They have retained the garage door though so it isn't a proper conversion (and is now I saw it was a gym!)
