Catching every cold my toddler has

I had that awful cold that was going round at Christmas and now my 1 year old has another cold I've caught this too again and feel like shit again. I know toddlers get colds all the time as their immune systems are building however I didn't expect to catch them all so soon after having the last one. I've always suffered badly with colds, they last 2 weeks and totally wipe me out. I also had one end of oct so quite a few in a short space of time. Is this just life now? Would the flu jab help me not get them so often or not? Obviously I can't avoid my 1 year old coughing and sneezing over me but I seem to pick up absolutely everything from him!

You’re doing pretty well, think I’ve had 5 colds and a vomiting bug since 1 yo DD started nursery at the end of November! Between Me, DH and DD there’s always one of us unwell.

Flu jab afaik will only help with that years strain of flu, not colds.

It’s pretty standard I’m afraid but should get better in the summer months.

Normal for the first winter or two of having kids, sorry. Then their and your immune system has built up.

Flu jab won’t help for colds. Get as much sleep and veg as you can and wash hands a lot.

StaceySolomonSwash · 07/03/2023 07:47

Sorry you're suffering! Sadly, as you say toddlers pick up every germ out there. You could try taking berocca or a multivitamin to boost your immune system?

YukoandHiro · 07/03/2023 07:50

The only good news I can give you is that if you choose to go on to have a second you now have an iron constitution. I got EVERYTHING with my first, but even despite the intervening lockdown, with my second I've only had about one in six things she brought back even though she gave them all to my eldest too.
Interestingly, my DH has been much more sick this time. He wasn't at home so much before but is now working hybrid like most of us so has far more day to day contact time and is getting everything.

Lullabies2Paralyze · 07/03/2023 07:51

I paid for flu jab as didn’t want to be poorly with a baby to look after. I’ve had 2 flus since. A bad one near xmas that I had flu shivers aches etc etc for 2 days then was drained for ages after, and recently another one which the flu symptoms only lasted about 3hrs one night then the fever broke, my husband was in bed with it for 2 days as he’s not had his jab

so it won’t stop you getting them but depending on what flu you have it may make the symptoms a loss less servere/pass quicker.

I think it only costs about a tenner so it’s worth considering to give you an extra boost

YukoandHiro · 07/03/2023 07:54

@Lullabies2Paralyze if the symptoms only lasted a few hours that is NOT the flu. Honestly do you think the NHS vaccinates huge swathes of the population for a slightly bad virus?
I had a breakthrough flu after the jab in January 2018. My DH and I were both so I'll that my mum had to move in for 12 days because we were physically incapable of safely looking after our then 4 month old baby.

YukoandHiro · 07/03/2023 07:55

*so ill

Lullabies2Paralyze · 07/03/2023 10:11

@YukoandHiro thanks is for your medical advice. By few hour symptoms I mean the aches cold hot flush shivers feel like death part. I was drained of energy for well over 2 weeks off it. But the actual fever part that bed ridden my husband for 2 days only affected me for a few hours.

but sure, I didn’t have the flu. Just clearly something else making me feel like I was about to die.

Lullabies2Paralyze · 07/03/2023 10:13

@YukoandHiro also lucky you to have a loving mother who cares enough to come look after you and your little one. Good on you

rickandmorts · 07/03/2023 10:29

Do you get fresh air every day? Not trying to trivialise your illness but I find lots of daily fresh air really helps keep colds away or reduce symptoms when I have one. Also do you take daily vitamin D? Most adults in the UK are low on vitD, especially in winter. I find taking vitamin D and zinc daily really help my immune system and I notice when I have spells of forgetting to take them (also keeps my coldsores away!)

Fannieannie63 · 07/03/2023 10:30

I’m a GM to dgc and I provide a lot of childcare, gc goes part time to a nursery. This is the second year that I’ve been completely floored health wise by the sheer amount of really nasty colds that I’m catching from them. The last one was so bad, that I had other complications and had to have antibiotics. I basically missed Xmas. Sometimes there’s only a few days between them. I feel very run down and take vitamins to try and boost myself. I think it’s par for the course and once the littles ones acquire immunity it more or less stops. Very frustrating though and I feel for you.

2chocolateoranges · 07/03/2023 10:32

I work in early years so you can imagine we catch everything. I’m on cold 3 since January so have started taking vitamin C tablets to see if hey help.

pippapips7 · 07/03/2023 10:44

Thanks for the responses, I feel more reassured that this is actually normal now! DP spends just as much time if not more lately with DS but rarely seems to catch his colds/bugs. I don't get nearly as much fresh air as I probably should as I spend the majority of my days in an office and I hate the cold weather. I'm definitely going to pick up some vitamins for myself and see if they help.

It's horrible, some of the baby/toddler germs could've come straight from Porton Down. Just before DD was 2 she had a sniffle and a temperature for a couple of days, no rash, zilch.

Me? All my body turned bright tandoori red, and my temperature was so high I was hallucinating, with a painted border coming on and off the wall at me.

They're just little germ factories, and eventually grow out of it.

SadCelticBunny · 07/03/2023 12:27

I was a childminder for many years and I caught every single thing the little ones turned up with.
I was constantly under the weather.

These days I don't get as many illnesses but having spent a weekend with my grandson two weeks ago guess what!
Stinking, snotty, snuffling cold that will not go!!

eurochick · 07/03/2023 13:18

Normal. Is your toddler disturbing your sleep? That can have a hugely detrimental effect on the immune system.

No he's actually always been a great sleeper even when poorly so I manage to get a full night sleep every night. My diet isn't great though, I often skip meals especially when DP is away and replace them with snacks (not very healthy ones) as I often can't be bothered cooking for myself once DS is in bed and I've got chores to do so that could be a factor. I'm going to have a look in the supermarket when I do my weekly shop for some supplements/vitamins.
