Solo holidays

Hoping some can point me in the right direction. My parents are farmers. My mum is early 70s and my dad will not leave the farm, just prefers not to do days out / holidays etc. My mum has accepted this and has gone out and built her own life, fitness groups etc. She really wants to have a holiday and is open to one where singles go and you can make friends. I want to help her research this but have no idea where to start. Does anyone know of any good companies?

My mil has used "solo holidays" and "just you". I'd also recommend Rambler's worldwide - they're not all hiking holidays, some are low grade walks/sightseeing. There's always a mix of couples/singles on those and everyone mingles.

I've done a couple of singles holidays with Friendship Travel.

Cruises are a very safe way for singles to travel and to meet people. They have a daily solos meet up and often people use these to group up and go on the same excursions. At dinner you can opt for a sharing table so you sit with other people and chat about your day. Alternatively you can always find somewhere quiet to think and relax.

I'm currently on a cruise, loads of single, older women travelling alone. There are so many types of cruise these days that I'm sure she would find one for her interests. Some of the companies don't charge single supplement either.

And this might be useful:

There are some really good cruises along the Danube and around the Baltic (but I guess the latter is being killed by the war in Ukraine)

I have to do a solo holiday this year and probably going to drive from Chicago to Seattle to see Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone etc

HF holidays are a company offering mainly walking, but also some general interest, holidays both in UK and abroad. They have a very good website.

They use their own accommodation in UK, large country houses, and the majority of people that go are single and generally 50 upwards.

Is it ok to say that not everyone beyond middle age wants to go on a cruise exclusively filled with other people of the same age? I would hate being stuck on a boat with strangers for any length of time! I like ‘moving on’ - and assume plenty of other people do, too …

I arranged a few for my mum when she was still quite fit. Look at Alternative Travel in Oxford. They do walking tours of various places. One was Pisa to Siena over 7 days (about 9 miles a day) with one or two rest days, and was stunning.

In the UK or abroad, can be 4 days or more, more or less strenuous, and as a group so you get to meet people. I know they do Spain, Italy, Scotland etc.

I did a great yoga trip to Croatia a few years ago. Most of us were single travellers, I think out of the 18 participants there was only one couple and one mother/daughter, the rest didn’t know anyone. We did yoga, ate together and there were optional excursions daily. Does she have any particular interests or ideas of what type of holiday she’d like?

Cruises are a great option. There's a solo cruises Facebook group that is excellent, some people even find cabin mates on it to save money but most lines have single cabins too. There's solo travellers meet ups everyday and tables set aside for those who wish to dine with other solo travellers. There's usually a solo traveller host too, to look after everyone. On excursions there's always people traveling alone, sometimes they are technically a couple but the other party has remained on ship (common I've found) due to disabilities or complete disinterest in the excursion

Intrepid or explore are good companies to look at too - I did a safari with intrepid, group was aged from 21-80! Mix of couples, pairs and singles - it was great fun!

If she likes walking then Walking Women might be a good option? Female only walking holidays in a variety of really nice locations….

Really late to say thank you here but thank you for all of these great suggestions! 👍
