Wisdom tooth agony - how to get rid of pain

I’m on a waiting list for ‘urgent’ removal but been warned it could be a very long time. Tooth has a massive hole in it, dentist said there’s exposed nerve and it’s half impacted with a huge hole into my gum around it . Dentist said a fortnight ago there’s a massive risk of infection . Been told it will need removal in a hospital as dentist said there’s no way I’ll manage without sedation, but I have a history of bad reactions to IV sedation so said will need more monitoring - all of which adds up to removal being a long way off .

I’ve taken over the counter cocodamol, 50mg diclofenac, hot salt water rinse, bonjela, and I’m still shaking with pain this morning . It spreads up into my jaw bone and into my ear and neck (pain) and makes it hard to open my mouth fully. I’ve ordered orajel in my shopping tonight and trying to stick to soft lukewarm foods and drinks on opposite side of mouth only .

I’ve had pericoronitis before on the opposite side but it doesn’t feel like that completely, it’s just absolute agony . Electric shock type pain .

I’m going to contact my dentist first thing tomorrow and ask for help but I can’t think straight for the level of pain I’m in and don’t know what to do . All I am doing is counting down to next dose of pain relief . I can’t really afford much more treatment - I’m worried I’ll need to pay a fortune if it’s a hospital and IV meds etc (though it’s an NHS list but I’ve no idea if that means they cover the op and meds or not, dentist didn’t say) - but I can’t keep going with this level of pain for months on end.

Another vote for Paramol (over the counter).
I had an infected wisdom tooth, the pain was horrific and that was the only thing that touched it.

Yeah, no one can help until 8am . 111 said it sounds like an abscess . Away to try and sleep through it, it’s absolute agony beyond anything I’ve ever felt before.

Good luck for today OP I have been thinking of you in so much agony it sounds beyond horrendous you poor thing.

I can't work out why they left that one in but took the others out. Mine gave me on and off pain for years when they saw all were impacted they all came out.

Hope they can fast track you to having it extracted. It sounds dangerous as well as hideous pain.

The 7mg of codeine in paramol will do fuck all, don’t waste your money.

Boots do a 12.5mg codeine + ibuprofen that is better than paramol.
Prescription strength co-codamol is 30mg and I needed 2 of those for abcess pain.

Hope you are getting some relief.
Honestly think anyone saying don't go to a and e for dental pain, has never experienced bad dental pain. I'm 58 and apart from a broken arm at age 11, I have been to a and e for myself once , ever. That was for a dental abscess that I had seen the dentist for. The pain was so bad I wanted to smash my head against a wall. It was way way worse than childbirth, and I've done that three times !
There's toothache and there's toothache !

Finally managed to see my dentist today - they’ve said it’s ‘grossly carious’ whatever that means, he said it’s probably got an abscess/infection and needs removing asap but asap is still 8-10 weeks - that’s even shorter than normal as said ideally it would be done under IV sedation which I’ve opted not to have. It’s not so sore today thank goodness. Dentist did say if it’s continuing to be so acutely sore they’ll see if it can be taken out much sooner.

Bloody hell (literally in your case) OP that's very shocking the wait time for an emergency. Why so long? Many emergencies and not enough dentists?

I can't bear that you are in so much pain until April

soggydigestives · 01/02/2023 14:38

Blimey I can't believe they are still making you wait that long. I would absolutely push for a sooner appointment, even exaggerating if necessary.
