Really boring but washing help..

My clothes keep coming out the washing machine still dirty/stained. I also have a 19 month old and his clothes are all stained with food/dirt. I expect some stains but nothing is coming out of the clothes. Like I dropped tomato sauce on my T-shirt and noticed the mark is still there. I've cleaned the machine/filter and put in a stain remover....is it time for a new machine?is that even a thing that happens when the machine is on its last legs🤷🏻‍♀️

Not sure it’s your machine, try hanging your t-shirt out on a sunny day in direct sunlight, that will get rid of tomato based stains.

dementedpixie · 28/01/2023 19:38

Rub washing up liquid into stains before washing with bio powder. I suspect its your detergent rather than your machine that's the issue

Mrsmch123 · 28/01/2023 19:55

I use fairy non bio atm. Is this the issue?

For stuff like tomato sauce and toddler food mess, I’d be treating the stains before and/or chucking some Vanish in the drum.

I’d also switch to biological powder.

CactusFlowers · 28/01/2023 19:58

Is it heating up properly? Check the glass door temp part way through.

AnchorWHAT · 28/01/2023 19:59

Biopowder isbetteratgetting out-stains but like pp said rub washing up liquid into stains before washing, ideally do so as soon as the item is taken off.

Timeforachangeisitnot · 28/01/2023 20:01

Fairy non bio is very poor at stain removal ime. After reading an AMA thread here, I realised that bio detergent would not harm my skin and switched. Game changer.
Don’t use Bio on wool though, and be sure to rinse well.
I like Aldi personally.

dementedpixie · 28/01/2023 20:01

@Mrsmch123 is it liquid or powder detergent?
Powder contains bleaches that help with stains
Bio powder also contains enzymes that help break down food stains

tornadoinsideoutfig · 28/01/2023 20:06

Do you run water through stains when they occur or add a drop of fairy liquid to a grease stain? As in any pretreatment before a wash?

Carpetmoth · 28/01/2023 20:07

Napisan (I tend to soak) is good and has the added benefit of killing bacteria etc. I often use a vanish bar too or washing up liquid if stain is greasy. Sunlight also helps with many stains. I try to soak when clothing is removed if the stain is bad.

If the problem is recent the washing machine might not be working correctly- as PP asked is it heating up the water? My previous washing machine stopped heating on certain programs but did others.

Carpetmoth · 28/01/2023 20:08

Napisan is also non-bio and you can use it in the machine

Mrsmch123 · 28/01/2023 20:09

I don't do anything to the clothes prior to washing them....maybe this is part of the problem🙈
I will check the temp on the next wash I do.
its liquid we use.
i normally pop vanish in the drawer and drum in the hope that it helps.
my 19 month old is just about to go into the next size of clothing so I'm keen to sort it before so I'm not constantly buying new clothes as the stains drive me mad😂🙈

StubbleAndSqueak · 28/01/2023 20:11

What temperature do you usually use ? Too hot can 'set' the stain

Mrsmch123 · 28/01/2023 20:12

It's always been a bit of a problem but seems worse now. What really got me thinking was he was playing out the back garden briefly and the bum of his baby grow got dirty as he sat down and it came out the wash as dirty as it went in. I wasn't sure if it was the machine as we have had it about 6ish years.

30 or 40 depending on the cycle.

We used to have this with DS’s clothes. Switched to a bio powder and never had an issue again.

squirrelnutkins1 · 28/01/2023 20:17

Sunlight is magic. Many baby clothes saved with this hack. Obv it's better/quicker in summer but it will still work year round, even on tomato stains.

lovemycbf · 28/01/2023 20:22

Definitely try biological washing powder alongside a good heaped tablespoon of soda crystals in every wash.
Also put a good amount in your washing machine without anything in it and put on the hottest 90 degrees wash once a month to clean the machine

Colourinsidethelines · 28/01/2023 20:25

Sunlight is the best for any tomato/yellow stains, bleaches them out quickly. I just wash as normal then put the stained stuff in the sun. Will still work in daylight in the winter, just not as quickly. For greasy stains apparently chalk works or washing up liquid first. I do soak things first like mud or grass stains too, it’s best to soak anything before the stain has chance to dry if you can as well.

trampoline123 · 28/01/2023 20:26

I always throw a bit of stain remover powder in with mine, always 40 and a proper wash for marked bits.

Saturdaynoon · 28/01/2023 20:29

I had exactly the same when I used Fairy Non bio. I switched to a biological powder when they started school, never had a problem since.

Shunkleisshiny · 28/01/2023 20:33

White shaving foam rubbed into the stain, works a treat!

Me too, try Ariel cold wash OP.

Eskarina24 · 28/01/2023 20:56

I work in costume, this is what we do-
To get rid of stains I wash any excess yuk off with COLD running water straight away. Then put in a sink with cold water & vanish powder (the real stuff) and leave for a few hours to soak.
The stain should be gone before you put the item in the washing machine (normal wash, 30 degrees)
If you put hot water (or out in the machine) on the stain before it’s out, you’ll ‘bake’ it into the fabric, then you’ll never get it out.

Maryandherlamb · 28/01/2023 20:57

Have you stretched back the rubber and cleaned behind it? I pulled it all back the other day and it was filthy! Wiped it all down and it is much better. Tbf our clothes were coming out fine, the machine just didn't smell right after washing. I had to properly get into all of the crevices to make it better, and then run it at 60 with machine cleaner.
