What activities do your DCs do outside school?

I'm looking for some activities/clubs for my DCs (aged 8 and 5) to do during the week after school.

What activities do yours do and would you recommend them?

We already do swim lessons and tried (but didn't like) Brownies.

Could the Cubs if Brownies wasn’t for her?

YerAWizardHarry · 28/01/2023 18:07

Try*

ClassroomRunaway · 28/01/2023 18:08

Yes, I will look at Cubs, thank you

DS(7) does kickboxing, Street Dance, guitar lessons (during school day), swim lessons and Beavers.

shivbo2014 · 28/01/2023 18:09

Musical Theatre, gymnastics, and keyboard.

DelurkingAJ · 28/01/2023 18:10

DS1 (10) - cricket (so much cricket!), Cubs and swimming. Plus cornet but lessons at school.
DS2 (6) - Beavers, swimming and summer-only cricket.

Really recommend a team sport. DS1 is NOT a natural sportsman but a lot of practice in the garden means he’s now in the county set up. He has made some lovely friends and it keeps him active and healthy.

MajorCarolDanvers · 28/01/2023 18:10

Try Beavers or Cubs instead of Brownies - much more adventurous

Football
Dancing
Running
Swimming

ClassroomRunaway · 28/01/2023 18:11

They already do a drama / musical theatre class on weekends - sorry, should have said that one.

Mentioned a few to DD (8) and she is very enthusiastic at the idea of street dance, so thank you for that

ClassroomRunaway · 28/01/2023 18:13

Interesting re team sports. I will look for something like that too. DS (5) isn't naturally all that sociable tbh, but I could definitely see a team sport giving him a bit of a boost

APurpleSquirrel · 28/01/2023 18:13

DD (8) does swimming, gymnastics & archery

DS (4) does swimming & gymnastics

ofwarren · 28/01/2023 18:13

Piano, swimming and choir

trilbydoll · 28/01/2023 18:16

DDs do Beavers/Cubs and Stagecoach. DD2 does athletics club after school one day - she isn't remotely sporty or good at running but she thought it looked fun and it can only help!

twistyizzy · 28/01/2023 18:16

DD 11: weekends are riding and pony club all year. Tuesdays swimming, Weds youth club, Thursday Band (flute).
April-Sept Saturday afternoon is paddleboarding

Reluctantadult · 28/01/2023 18:19

My 8yo Dd has somehow ended up doing brownies, choir and drama (both are free after school clubs), violin, swimming and gymnastics.

My 5yo ds does swimming and Lego, which is a free after school one. I've asked him if he would like to try tae kwondo or gymnastics, but leaving it for now until he's actively asking.

DelurkingAJ · 28/01/2023 18:20

Cricket has given autistic DS1 a much wider circle of friends. Firstly the other children at cricket (they’re all obsessed and respect his skills) and secondly it’s given him a very socially acceptable conversation topic so has eased things at school significantly. I find it fascinating how him bouncing off the walls whilst talking cricket is seen by both children and adults as to be encouraged whereas when it’s about maths problems it leads to confused faces!

NonJeNeRegretteRien · 28/01/2023 18:21

No idea why really but I didn’t like Brownies as a child either, but I loved Girls Brigade - it was a bit more structured and nurturing maybe.

mine just does ballet at the moment but when she’s a bit older I’ll sign her up for an activity or two more - probably something musical and/or sports team oriented.

RhubarbFairy · 28/01/2023 18:22

DS1 (11) only does football now but plays for both the school team and an external squad. Oh, and drum lessons, but they're at school.

DS2 (9) has swimming lessons and goes to Cubs, which he loves. We were very lucky with our Cub pack, though. We've got proactive leaders. Not all groups are equal.

If you're going to try Cubs for her, get her name on as many in your area as you can. I ended up casting my net about 5 miles in all directions and sticking DS1 on the list of about 10 groups. The one we got is pretty much the furthest away that I contacted. But it's amazing, so I'm happy to drive him there (only takes about 15 minutes).

DS2 has just convinced me to let him try hockey as he loves it at school. He's currently got gymnastics, martial arts, and piano in his 'got bored of' pile, so I'm apprehensive. Cubs is the only thing that's stuck as he's so sociable. And we make him swim.

OzziePopPop · 28/01/2023 18:22

Rock climbing, rugby, Scouts, Zumba and an exercise class for us (2 kids, 12 and 16 so a little older than yours) 😀

Salti · 28/01/2023 18:24

DS1 - Performing arts, karate, beavers, swimming football, ju jitsu (occasionally but missing a lot now with football matches)
DS2 - karate & swimming. He does want to start performing arts and beavers in September. Has recently quit football for the third time. He’s just not as sporty and more of a homebody!
Every child is different.

whoruntheworldgirls · 28/01/2023 18:25

Daughter aged 6 does swimming, an after school sports club (changes every half term) and rainbows. In summer she'll do All Stars cricket on a Friday too.

FizzyStream · 28/01/2023 18:31

My two (boys) 6 and 9 do cubs and beavers after school and attend drama class at the weekends (there are evening classes too).

Luckily school do a variety of after school and lunchtime clubs each half term so they've also done dancing, soft archery, dodgeball, football and choir. Not a private school either so we're very lucky.

How about martial arts, Horse riding (expensive but I love it!), friends 9 yo girl goes wild swimming and does triathlons?

FizzyStream · 28/01/2023 18:32

Ooh pp said trampolining. I used to love that at age 9-10.
