Tobacco and cigarettes in luggage and carry on

Hi just wondered if you bring back 250g of tobacco in suitcase from Lanzarote can you also get a carton of cigarettes to put in your carry on?

I know they have limits but wondered if it was split between luggage and carry on if that makes a difference?

I can't carry the other as I am also carrying 250g of tobacco.

I think I am right that you can't bring tobacco and cigarettes even if it's split between checked in luggage and carry on but H thinks you can do both.

Does anybody know please?

I think the limit is per person, not per bag.

The limit is per person so you could have 200 cigarettes and he could have 250g of tobacco. Doesnt matter if its in the case or in carry on.

We both have 250g of tobacco on us so no more is allowed is there?

No you have reached your limits if you both have 250g of tobacco. You cant have cigarettes too

I assume people still bring back loads more? When I used to smoke we used to bring 3000 each back from the Canaries in the good old days when B&H were £9/sleeve.

Just don't want to risk buying them just to have them taken off us.
But how do they know you have some in your case and then carry on? Sorry if I'm being thick

You're supposed to declare if you have extra

In the past before brexit I'm sure the limits were different as we were still in the EU

AJ2009 · 28/01/2023 16:35

So you declare then pay extra for it? Or would they still take it off you ?

If you declare the excess amount above the duty free limit yes, you will pay the duty (and VAT) and it will not be taken off you.
If you don't declare it then you may have to pay not only the duty on the excess goods but also on the entire amount you bring in.

It’s per person. My friend brought 4 boxes back recently and got them confiscated.
