Teachers who have left the profession - what next?

Hi there. I’ve been teaching for 15 years and more and more I’m feeling like I’m ready to leave the profession. I know lots of teachers are currently feeling like this. Only trouble is I’m not sure what else I’d do as I work full time and have two children of my own so I rarely have the head space to think through alternative career options properly. It would be interesting to hear the stories of other ex-teachers. What did you go on to do and how did you get into a new career? I currently teach Psychology so if anyone has a background in teaching this particular subject and went on to a related career I’d be really interested to hear what you’re doing now.

Also how did you decide to leave teaching? It seems like such a significant thing to do after being in the profession for so long and I’m worried I’d be making a rash decision! TIA.

Taught for three years as a second career and left to join a company as a PA. Worked my way through the ranks and 5 years on earn double what I would have as a UPS3 teacher. Take the leap.

I think yours is the exception to the rule type experience Harry....

Yup.

I got the alert to this while I was going round in circles googling jobs. Even going down to 30-35k they all want "experience of" whatever it is.

I am so worn out and so demoralised. And no idea how to improve my job prospects.

Take.my advise and try to stick with it until retirement.

I'm not sure my mental health would take that advice. It's decades to go :(

I commented on this thread too.

I actually filled in my forms to retire from teaching over the weekend. After 29 years I need to do something else. The joy has totally gone from teaching.

I'm 56. I've applied for a couple of Civil Service jobs (my TA secured a job with the CS 2 years ago) but so far no luck. I also got an interview for an early years assessor but there was 20 hours of teaching (which wasn't mentioned anywhere in the job description) so I withdrew as I have no desire to teach 16-18 year olds.

I do have an interview in the summer for a job doing online training for a company that offer speed awareness courses. It's sub contracted so self employed but wfh and flexible which actually suits me.

We shall see.
