Anyone awake? In hospital with 1 year old

Having the longest night. 1 year old had a bit of cold that turned into a wheeze that turned into not being able to get his breath. Called 111 and they sent an ambulance. That was about 9.30. We were triaged fast and he went straight on a nebuliser.
Since then we’ve been in the assessment unit being observed. I don’t really know what they’re looking for. Oxygen sats seem okay actually but he still seems to be working quite hard. He also has a mild fever now. Haven’t seen the doctor for a few hours. I will ask what’s happening when they come to do obs next I guess.

Just so worried about DS but also (very much as a secondary thing) slightly alarmed that I’m going to need to stay awake all night. There’s a trolley but we couldn’t sleep together on that and a plastic chair. Was sort of hoping we’d be on a ward or sent home by now, though I know how things are at the moment.

Joining you here if that’s ok? Currently in A and E with mum. We’ve been here since 6pm. I’m burnt out. Hope you’re ok.

PumpkinSoup21 · 28/01/2023 03:11

Thanks for all the well wishes and yay for bright colours and pastels for baby boy clothes!

@Thisisnotmyname2022 - I’m so sorry to hear that. Have you got anywhere at all? Hope your mum is treated as quickly as possible and it’s nothing too serious.

We’re still waiting on a bed.

When we arrived there was an ambulance that was taped off as a crime scene! Apparently there’s been a murder and the person killed was in that ambulance so it’s now part of the investigation. So awful!

Jeez that sounds scary. I know there’s been some kind of emergency here although not sure what. She’s being kept in, her oxygen levels have dropped. She has a blood clot so is now on oxygen and has just had some blood thinners. Her first lot of bloods got lost, so we had waiting 5 hours for nothing. We are made it to a cubicle just before 3. X

Ugh. At least glad they caught it eventually. We have a private room which is awesome - nice and quiet for him. They are now going to put him in oxygen as sats have started dropping. Can’t believe it’s nearly 4 in the morning. I need to find out what time dawn is!

Oh - another 4 and half hours. Sort of forgot it was January.

A blood clot must be really scary but as I understand it if they’re caught then it’s usually very treatable?

sending love to you, OP, I’ve been there with DD a few times and it’s worrying, especially when they are so little
I hope he perks up on oxygen (DD always did) and that it allows him to recover quickly
Is there anyone who can cover for you for a little while later, to give you a break. I used to go for a walk, to get some fresh air and a Costa and return to the ward a little more refreshed ❤️

AWaferThinMint · 28/01/2023 06:15

I hope you're doing ok. I've been there with a baby with bronchiolitis and then again when he gout croup a few months later. It's just exhausting.

Glad you have tea and choc and hope you managements snatch some sleep.

Chumbibi · 28/01/2023 06:18

Hi OP. My DD had the exact same thing at 1 year old. Lockdown baby, never had a cold and then went to nursery at 11 months and caught everything! Her ox stats were dipping around the 90 mark and just to be sure she was admitted. Once she was on oxygen and nebeulisees she rallied back very quickly. they do bounce back quickly!

So worrying for you though and those machines will wake you every 10 mins so likely you will be delirious with tiredness. Me and DH had to swap out the next day to take shifts. Hope you can do that or have other family who can help out with your other little one.

hope he is doing better soon. I remember how worrying and exhausting it was!

Margo34 · 28/01/2023 06:29

Hope you managed to get some sleep OP! I've been awake with pregnancy insomnis for almost 2hrs now 🥱 I'd forgotten about this side of pregnancy!

My DC1 had a similar experience to yours at a younger age and I didn't sleep a wink because the oxygen monitor kept beeping so frequently. The nurses were awesome and snuck me in a brown paper bag with fruit biscuits and snacks because we'd been there all evening and I hadn't eaten since lunch. When you get home I hope your DH can tag in and let you catch up on rest. Get well soon to your little one!

Delorestormborn · 28/01/2023 06:39

I hope you get some sleep. My DD was in hospital with pneumonia when she was 18months. She bounced back really quickly - but the sleep deprivation and worry made me a wreck! Take care of yourself.

MyMumhasDementia · 28/01/2023 06:51

I’ve been in A&E with my 90 year old mum.
shes slept most of the night apart from when she went for a ct scan.
im just about holding my eye lids open…. X

mrsbitaly · 28/01/2023 07:06

Hoping your little one is getting better OP you must be exhausted

Floofyduffypuddy · 28/01/2023 07:06

Hi op I had this when DD was about 2. Too late now but I took our buggy with us and she was in there! Which was a huge blessing.

The beeping!

PumpkinSoup21 · 28/01/2023 07:13

Well I’ve had a couple of half hour naps but he really won’t sleep for long anywhere - just coughs himself awake. Feeling a bit delirious now but looking forward to talking to husband soon and making a plan.

@PumpkinSoup21 how is your little one doing?

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 28/01/2023 18:10

Hey, how’s things this evening? We left mum around 5 and went back at half 9. I’m home again, can’t keep my eyes open. X

PumpkinSoup21 · 28/01/2023 22:52

Exhausted. But we’re back home with a baby breathing somewhat better, inhalers and a management plan. And now the 5 year old has a fever! Praying for an okay night.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 28/01/2023 23:24

So glad to hear you are back home and your baby's breathing is under control now - I hope your 5-year-old's fever doesn't keep you all awake tonight

Crumpledstilstkin · 28/01/2023 23:42

Just seen this and another one to say been there and it's grim! Don't be afraid to call up if something is still worrying you, they generally give you the number for paeds.

PumpkinSoup21 · 29/01/2023 11:57

Thank you. We have a very low threshold for going back in and clear step by step plan. Thankfully last night he actually slept okay and the inhaler is keeping things on track whenever he struggles a bit. He just needed the nebuliser and a bit of help with oxygen for a night I think. Hopefully it’s a one off and we’re not on course for another asthma diagnosis.

Husband did all the getting up with 5 year old and he was actually okay once he’d had some nurofen. Calpol doesn’t seem to work so well for him for some reason. Fever was 40.3 😬But it’s down this morning. Today he is having unlimited screen time, so long as he takes rest breaks and promises to drink. He’s delighted frankly but also that kind of subdued kid they become when they’re a bit ill - you know when you suddenly think ‘why haven’t I been asked 37 questions in the last 10 seconds?’ and then you actually miss that kind of thing.

Sounds like good news, glad to hear it ☺️
