Dental help- bleeding after extractions

Dh had two teeth extracted this morning, it went well. But he's home and 10 hours later it's still bleeding quite a bit. Not constantly but the clot keeps dislodging and then gushes. He's still biting gauze but we're running out and not sure what to do. He won't be able to go to bed like this.

Does he take blood thinners?
Was it a molar?

Apply pressure for a good 15 20 mins without stopping, clean kitchen roll does the same as gauze. Ensure he's sitting down doing this and no strenuous activity this evening.

Anything that raises blood pressure can cause it to bleed again so he must take it easy.

It's 111 otherwise though if it carries on and you'll probably need to go to a and e for haemostatic agents or stitches.

Also bloody saliva is normal 10 hours after. But not active bleeding.

He doesn't take blood thinners but did have a similar problem when he had foot surgery, ended staying in over night when it should have been day surgery.

He's laying on the sofa just now, it's stopped just now but keeps starting up again.

I had this and had to go back to the dentist. They stitched it.

It wasn't done at our local dentist, he was referred to a place 45 minutes away. Plus it will be closed now.

This is very good advice. I’ll add damp the kitchen roll/gauze with water and wring out before placing. Dry gauze will lift the clot back out. Damp should let it stay.
111/ring your normal dentist and find out their out of hours procedure which should be on their answerphone.

AnotherAppleThief · 27/01/2023 21:35

That makes perfect sense, we'll start wetting the gauze.

I've just had this. Was told to go back to the dentist for active bleeding. The dentist put some more stitches in, and also told me to apply a wet tea bag to the wound if there was any more bleeding. He said the tannin in the teabag stops bleeding.

MrsMorton · 27/01/2023 21:37

he needs to bite on the gauze for a prolonged period of time. Like 40min of pressure. Every time you move it to have a look, you move the clot. The gauze needs to be damp too.

if hes bitten on it for 40 min and it's gushing, you need to go to A&E.

When I had an extraction last year I was told if I had any problems to phone my own dentist (even out of hours) and they would have recorded instructions on the phone who to call. I think we can call ours out and go to the surgery out of hours, but dread to think how much that would cost!

My son also had some teeth extracted today. As well as the advice above, we were also told he should stay upright for a while, obviously not all night, but the dentist said not to go home and lie down. I'm just thinking of your DH lying on the sofa. It might be good to prop him up a bit!

This is what I was advised as well, to avoid raising the blood pressure at the site. Extra pillows/cushions in bed tonight.
