Should I tell my children's school that I support the strike action?

My DC school has just let us know about strike action. We have been waiting for a while. My eldest class is closed, absolutely fine, I will keep him home. But should I send a message saying that I support them. Basically saying "don't feel bad" but without saying that? And how should I word it? I'm a teacher myself but not striking as I work on supply. I just won't be working that day.

It's not weird to say something. I wished my postie luck through their strikes. I'm sure anyone striking appreciates the thought that people are behind them.

I've been wondering exactly this! I've decided on an email to the head to be forwarded to those striking. It's been a miserable week with virtually no other parents supporting the strike, gutted for the teachers that they've got to this point and for the lack of understanding from my fellow parents!

Our primary school is having a picket line. I've told them I support them.

Ds was thoroughly supporting them until he found that his year (11) is meant to be in. He's wondering if he'd be allowed to join the picket line...

My sister received an email reminding parents it’s unlawful to join a picket line if you’re not a member of the striking union so could all parents and pupils refrain from joining any picket lines, please.

Seems your son wasn’t the only one thinking that 😂😂😂

@Itstarts oh will they not? That's a shame... Do you know why they won't be? I thought it was what you did when you were striking?

The ones where I work are looking forward to a lie in 😆

I do think there is concern about the amount of interest in/support for striking workers at the moment. I know for me it feels like they are striking on behalf of the whole country.

Funnily enough, I just emailed the school to thank the teachers for taking the kids away for three days on a trip, I added a ps. Saying I supported the strike and I hope it was successful. Ds has another 6 years of education and I want his teachers to be well paid and happy and his school to be able to balance the books. Obviously I hope that it is like that for other children in the future too.

That is actually misrepresenting the law. Google "visiting a picket line". You can't be an official picket obviously if it's not your workplace etc, BUT you can visit a picket line to chat to people etc. Make sure you're not obstructing the pavement or access etc. I intend to say hello to the teachers outside our school (I have checked they will be there) on my way to my own picket line (not a teacher) and all local striking unions will meet up later for a rally.

Absolutely tell them! I’m a teacher intending to strike and we’ve had loads of lovely emails from parents. And most primaries where I work intend to have picket lines. I’d be delighted if someone turned up with cake!

Yes it didn’t mention visiting one was unlawful, it said joining one was unlawful. As a PP said, it feels like this one is on behalf of everyone so it wouldn’t actually surprise me if people tried to join them.
