Applying for dual Italian/UK citizenship - can anyone help?

So my partner is looking into getting dual citizenship/Italian passport, we have looked online about how to go about it but still have some queries and after calling the Italian consulate in London for clarity they basically said look online...

His grandfather was born in Scotland to 2 Italian parents, he then went to Italy for some years but then back to Scotland, married his Scottish gran and had his dad etc - so we're pretty sure that makes him eligible, however it says about if his grandfather or father has been nationalised or renounced their right to Italian citizenship then that breaks the chain - what exactly does becoming nationalised/renouncing their right mean? What would they of had to do?
Also do we know what documents would be required?
Great-grandfather's birth certificate, as well as grandfathers and father's? Death certificates?

Any concrete advice is greatly appreciated if anyone has been through the process, Thank you :)

Becoming nationalised means taking on the citizenship of another country and renouncing citizenship means to give up citizenship.

Did any of the great-grandparents or grandfather give up their Italian citizenship or claim British citizenship? If yes to nationalisation, I would assume it would be a question of whether they held dual citizenship and if this is acceptable for the Italian passport? Or is any citizenship at all that isn't Italian disqualify any future generations?

Was the grandfather a citizen of Italy? Being born in Scotland will probably have made it harder for your partner to qualify as the last male ancestor born in Italy was a great grandfather. Does he have copies of birth certificates, passports etc to help his claim? Ultimately he loses nothing (apart from the processing fee) by applying and may gain citizenship. Seems worth a go.

He might be able to obtain Italian citizenship through that Italian grandfather. As far as I know, you can go back as far as a grandparent.
I don't know as much about Italian citizenship law as I do about British (I live in Italy but used to work in this area in the UK) but I do know an American woman who has recently been granted Italian citizenship on the basis of her Italian grandmother who went to the US when very young.
It would probably depend if Italian citizenship at the time of the grandfather's birth was ius soli or sanguinis. I have a feeling it was both. So, grandad would have been both Italian and British and your husband could obtain Italian citizenship on that basis. Let me see if I can find a link.

Have a look there. I think, on the basis of what you know, the grandfather will have been Italian from birth, and also British from birth. The fact that he acquired his British status involuntarily means he won't have lost his Italian citizenship (the clause that says up to 1992 if you were naturalised as another citizen you lost your Italian citizenship- Britain has never objected to having multiple nationalities so unlikely there was any renunciation. Also, before the British Nationality Act of 1981, anyone born in the UK automatically obtained citizenship - that's not the case now, but it undoubtedly was when the grandfather was born )

PS the link above is from the US, but that doesn't matter as it's the explanation of how to obtain Italian citizenship by descent that you're interested in. If you scroll down it gives you the documents needed (looks like you're wanting n5 citizenship through paternal grandfather) so relevant documents relate to paternal great grandfather

Hello all, I’m applying for Italian dual citizenship, I was born in Scotland but live in England. To cut a long story short, I have traced back to my great grandparents from San Giuseppe in Picinisco (on both blood lines of my Fathers) proving I have a clear Italian heritage. I wrote a letter in Italian) to the Consul in Picinisco requesting birth, marriage, death certificates for both sides of my lineages. I am happy to say I’ve just paid for and am currently waiting for my certificates. Can anyone confirm that on receipt of certificates do I send certificates to the Apostle in Picinisco to have certificates stamped to make them
official before contacting Italian Consul in London? Has anyone been down this route before? Thanks for taking the time to read my journey so far.

If it’s still possible ask for the certificates to be issued with an apostille already on them. If not, the consulate may be able to do it for you.
